Job Category: IT - Information TechnologyJob Description:The Database Engineer 5 is a professional, master role that plans and conducts assignments, generally large and important projects, or more than one project. The Engineer is fully responsible for the systems and infrastructure which support a product. The person directs and guides the design to ensure compliance with technical and architectural standards. The Engineer understands and communicates the non-functional requirements which are necessary for successful product operation. Additionally, the position ensures the implementation and transition into production happens smoothly. While the solution runs in production this person is responsible to resolve any problems or issues that are escalated. The Engineer engages vendors in the resolution of incidents as necessary, and once an incident is resolved, the Engineer is responsible to ensure all defects in the system or process are identified, tracked, and resolved. This person ensures that all proposed changes have been adequately planned and reviewed eliminating the possibility of unplanned service outages. This is a leadership role that mentors other engineers.This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel.We value early, mid and late-career candidates and encourage all applicants with the posted skills and abilities to apply.Responsibilities:Configure and maintain the database software, and create data structuresAnalyze and protect data, including troubleshooting, backups, security processes/configurationDesign and develop both data services and data integrationsFollow optimal engineering practicesFulfill technical lead role for engineering solutionsEvaluate, recommend, purchase, install, test, upgrade, and maintain existing or proposed systems to structure and access databaseLead in creating standards for all groupsCreate standards and procedures for operations teamsTrain support personnel and systems usersAnalyze database problems and provide problem resolutionRespond to security issues and requestsParticipate in Problem Management processMaintain production documentationFollow policy, standards, and regulatory requirementsParticipate in an on-call rotation working evenings and weekendsQualifications:
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience
Eight years of relevant professional experience which must include six years of experience supporting product development activities and guiding technology decisions
Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge in field of specialization to the completion of significant assignments.
Proven successful leadership skills
Experience with change, incident, and problem management processes. Strong operational understanding and control.
Mastery of SQL in two or more RDBMS systems
Experience with NoSQL databases
Experience supporting data services and integrations in virtual environments
Experience with both transactional and analytical data processing
Clear and accurate written and verbal communications
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated experience evaluating vendors and their products to identify critical gaps in their skills and abilities
Demonstrated ability to mentor and train peers
Strong understanding of the business processes being supported by the solution
Outstanding troubleshooter with the ability to react well under pressure
Collaborates and interacts with others in a professional office environment
To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using computer monitors/equipment
Strong experience with Oracle databases
Strong experience with PostgreSQL databases (on premise and cloud)
Strong experience with SQL Server databases
MarkLogic experience a plus
XQuery experience a plus
Preferred:
Master's degree
