Growing together.The Evaluation and Data Science team within UHC Clinical Services is charged with conducting impact evaluations for clinical programs touching the lives of our members. Our goal is to ensure that each clinical program we deploy delivers the greatest value by improving health outcomes, enhancing the member experience, and promoting the responsible use of resources. We support these programs by analyzing data to inform business cases and leading rigorous evaluations across all Lines of Businesses. The Clinical Database Programmer 1) supports the team in analytic dataset creation for evaluations of UHC clinical programs, 2) stays current with emerging and evolving data sources to ensure analyses leverage the most relevant, accurate, and comprehensive information available, and 3) advances modernization of our approach to data storage, access, and analysis. Ideal candidates will have intermediate to advanced SAS and SQL programming skills to build analytic datasets from relational databases (e.g., administrative claims and other health care databases).Primary Responsibilities:
  • Support the Evaluation and Data Science Team and UHC Clinical Services as a data and programming expert
  • Conduct data extraction from a variety of data sources (primarily administrative claims) and SAS/SQL programming of analytic datasets
  • Support standardization efforts, including creating and documenting standard programs to increase efficiency and ensure quality
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Stay informed of data migrations throughout the larger company to help the Evaluation and Data Science transition data platforms as necessary
  • Explore new data sources to assess the completeness and quality of data, often comparing them against legacy data sources to ensure consistency and identify any gaps
  • Share knowledge of data/programming/technology advancements with the team through presentations, documentation, and collaborative discussions

  • 5+ years of experience in data processing (i.e., including data retrieval, cleaning, and manipulation) in SAS and/or SQL
  • 3+ years of experience supporting health services, health care economics, epidemiology, or outcomes research
  • 3+ years of experience with administrative claims data, EHR/EMR data, or complex relational databases required; preference will be given to candidates with experience using large administrative claims assets from health plan/payers
  • Proficiency in executing multi-step data management and analysis tasks including creating data dictionaries and specification documents from research protocols
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in development of analytic plans and protocols
  • Experience with R, Python, Unix, or Putty
  • Demonstrative experience writing/understanding SAS Macros
  • Knowledge of cloud-based software and platform services (Snowflake, Azure)
  • Proven ability to participate in project design and interpretation
  • Proven ability to break down and clearly define problems

The salary for this role will range from $89,900 to $160,600 annually based on full-time employment.
