We serve low-income and potential first-generation college students interested in STEM fields from Cleveland, Chief Sealth, Foster, and Franklin High Schools in King County in Washington State. More information about OMA&D, go to .POSITION PURPOSEThe Curriculum Coordinator (Continuing Education Coordinator) provides tutoring in math and science and advising to our students at their high schools, provides evening and Saturday workshops, and teaches classes in the UW STEMsub Summer Academy. They also help design and implement the UW STEMsub curriculum, place students in appropriate summer STEM classes, help coordinate section instructors and Summer Academy lecturers, and help plan program events and field trips.
The Curriculum Coordinator plays an important role in developing and implementing the academic and enrichment workshops and mentoring and internship opportunities for program participants. They work with other staff to manage the online learning environment, the program website, and our online communication tools.The Curriculum Coordinator utilizes multiple systems to track and monitor student progress. They employ their expertise and understanding of rigorous secondary curriculum and graduation requirements, postsecondary admissions, and career development to help advise students. To support these students, they work closely with secondary and postsecondary staff and communicate with parents/caregivers.They also collaborate with UW departments, faculty, and staff to provide opportunities and to help provide a rich curriculum that prepares UW STEMsub students motivated to attend higher education for success in STEM fields.This is a federal grant-funded position. This position is located at the UW STEMsub office on the UW Seattle Campus and requires travel to our four target high schools and occasional work on evenings and weekends.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Curriculum Coordinator will assume the following specific duties:
  • (40%) Meet with students at each target school and online to provide STEM tutoring and advising to students, monitor student progress, and communicate with students, families, teachers, and guidance counselors to support students and overcome obstacles to their success. Advise students about course selection and placement in advanced coursework and arrange for tutorial support, behavioral interventions, or referral to service agencies when needed.
  • (15%) Coordinate and develop curricula for two-year Summer STEM Survival Skills curriculum and teach Summer STEM or section classes. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of comprehensive need assessments for Summer Academy STEM courses. Revise curricula, coordinate activities, and present at Saturday Workshops.
  • (15%) Assist the Director in developing and implementing the Summer Academy by collaborating with UW departments, faculty, and staff to enlist lecturers and teaching staff and provide opportunities and a rich curriculum for UBMS students. Direct the planning and implementation of STEM field trips and activities and the Summer Awards Ceremony.
  • (5%) With the Director, help manage the design and implementation of UBMS mentor groups including needs assessment, curriculum development, and coordination of academic and enrichment workshops for program participants.
  • (10%) Create dynamic and interactive STEM content and information about graduation requirements, postsecondary admissions, financial aid, and career development for the program website and student and staff portals and deliver online webinars and tutorials. With the Director, help maintain the systems utilized for collecting, organizing, and presenting information including databases, web sites, and content management systems.
  • (5%) Assist in recruitment and enrollment of new students. Conduct presentations and informational meetings; help review applications for completion and eligibility and collect missing documentation and student school records and assure proper entry into the program database; assist in reviewing, selecting, and notifying applicants to the program.
  • (5%) Work with the Director and Counselling Services Coordinator to utilize the UBMS database to generate required reports and input data as required and prepare for the Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • (5%) Liaison with teachers, counselors, and support staff at target schools and represent the UBMS program in meetings and other functions both on and off campus. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Lead Responsibilities
Lead in development and implementation of a STEM tutoring program and providing mentoring and internship opportunities for program participants. Lead in placing students in Summer Academy STEM classes, coordinating section activities, and STEM activities and field trips. Co-lead in monitoring student progress and developing academic year workshops.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree B.A. or B.S. degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math required.
  • A strong math background and at least two years' experience tutoring or teaching Mathematics through Calculus are required.
  • A minimum of one year's experience in STEM teaching at the high school or college level is required.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience in curriculum design and experience in online instruction and effective use of educational technology is required.
  • Knowledge of effective tutoring strategies and tools, career exploration resources and postsecondary institutions and college admissions is required.
  • Ability to coordinate group activities and to help select, train and help supervise part-time staff and student workers is required.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel independently to target schools are required. Successful completion of criminal background check required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • M.S. degree desired.
  • Teaching certificate and/or bilingual preferred.
  • Past TRIO participant and/or experience in working with disadvantaged students and their families preferred.
  • Experience in graphical design of instructional materials for the web and knowledge of web and graphic software preferred.
  • Experience working with databases and gathering data from users on the web preferred.
  • Experience in working with WordPress, Excel, FileMaker, and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
