Head Lifeguard (Seasonal)STATUS: SeasonalSeasonal, Temporary, and non-city positions are not eligible for City of Converse benefits. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-ExemptThe Head Lifeguard oversees safety, trains and monitors Lifeguard staff and maintains the Pool. He or she will mentor and supervise the other lifeguards and assist with in-service training. He or she is responsible for ensuring the safety of the facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Duties include but are not limited to proper operation and maintenance of pool equipment. The Head Lifeguard must be in good physical and mental condition and maintain professional work-related practices in areas including safety, alertness, dependability, responsibility, initiative, tact, courteousness, common sense, good judgment, cleanliness, endurance, and the ability to work with patrons of all ages.ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to the onsite and offsite Pool Managers, the Onsite Pool Assistant Manager, and/or the Public Works Foreman.
  • Supervises Lifeguards.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patrons, other members of the public, co-workers, and others.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:The Head Lifeguard, with or without reasonable accommodation, performs essential job duties including but not limited to:
  • Performing all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary.
  • Ensuring the safety of swimmers, patrons and others; ensuring that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks; fills in for Lifeguards as necessary.
  • Ensuring that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Mentoring and supervising the other lifeguards.
  • Keeps management and supervisors well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs.
  • Inventories and recognizes when supplies or equipment need to be ordered and communicates the needs to the Aquatics Manager
  • Assisting with in-service training.
  • Rescuing distressed patrons, using correct rescue techniques and equipment;
  • Responding quickly to all emergency situations;
  • Observing activities in assigned areas to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions;
  • Examining injured persons and administering first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using proper training and medical supplies and equipment;
  • Preventing accidents and eliminating or minimizing hazardous situations;
  • Administering emergency first aid as needed and contacting emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury;
  • Brushing and vacuuming pool daily;
  • Communicating to other lifeguards and facility staff the need for additional assistance or equipment in an emergency;
  • Maintaining quality of pool water and proper pool chemistry by testing pool water and adding chemicals as required;
  • Cleaning restrooms, including scrubbing toilets, sanitizing the restrooms, restocking toilet paper;
  • Observing and enforcing all rules and regulations of the facility;
  • Warning recreational participants of inclement weather, unsafe areas, or prohibited conduct;
20. Inspecting recreational and safety equipment and reporting problems, concerns or unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisors;21. Instructing patrons in swimming or other appropriate recreational activities and providing safety precaution information;22. Educating patrons and informing them of the purpose of and the need for rules and regulations;23. Assisting with swimming lessons as required;24. Working safely and maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary pool and facility;25. Handling and protecting cash when working in the pool office;26. Following City policies, procedures and the instructions of his/her supervisors or person in charge;27. Attending training sessions and meetings as scheduled;28. Treating others respectfully; promoting harmony; contributing to a positive team spirit and showing respect and sensitivity for diversity and cultural differences; adapting to a changing environment;29. Assisting others; being helpful, cooperative and courteous, and demonstrating a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers and others;30. Reporting in a timely manner all issues, concerns and questions to the supervisor or others as appropriate in the chain of command, and communicating issues and events effectively with co-workers;31. Taking up matters affecting his or her position with the immediate superior and through proper channels;32. Punctual, regular, on-site, in-person attendance is a job requirement;33. Demonstrating initiative and diligence in the prompt and proper completion of all job duties, whether or not listed in this Job Description;34. Safeguarding City property and recognizing and reporting needed repairs;35. Working safely, following safety rules and training, and maintaining a clean, safe working environment;36. Maintaining confidentiality with regard to all City business;37. Performing other duties as assigned.RequirementsBASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Have at least one year of satisfactory experience as a lifeguard;
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
  • Possess and maintain current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid; and
  • Successfully complete pre-employment medical/physical/drug tests and background check before final placement.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:In order to successfully achieve the goals of the Public Works Department, the Head Lifeguard must meet the following physical and mental requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Be a strong swimmer.
  • Know when a patron is in distress or danger.
  • Lift or move objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and interact effectively with co-workers and the public.
  • Sit or stand for long periods.
  • Frequently stoop/bend, push, reach and pull objects at or from varying heights.
  • Occasionally engage in repetitive motion involving the hands, arms and legs as in swimming and running.
  • Learn and remember information and details relating to the job.
  • Ability to concentrate on and complete tasks and to understand, and communicate information about the job.
  • Ability to understand the meaning of and use and speak words understandably and effectively in the English language.
  • Good hearing and listening abilities, that is, the Head Lifeguard must be able to hear spoken words from patrons, co-workers, supervisors and others.
  • Good motor coordination skills, that is, the Head Lifeguard must be able to coordinate his or her eyes, hands and feet rapidly and accurately in order to swim and run, in response to visual, auditory and other stimuli.
  • Work under pressure and deadlines in order to respond to the public and co-workers.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:The Head Lifeguard must have the ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to do many things well, including but not limited to:
  • Be a strong swimmer and understand safe lifeguarding methods, current rescue techniques and procedures, and first aid application and resuscitation;
  • Be in good physical and mental condition and maintain professional work-related practices including but not limited to good judgment, common sense, safety, alertness, dependability, responsibility, initiative, tact, courteousness, cleanliness, endurance, and the ability to work with patrons of all ages;
  • Provide good customer service, including assessing patron's and guest's needs, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating customer satisfaction;
