Scope of JobThe Medical Scribe will work directly alongside physicians and other healthcare providers to document patient encounters and medical information in real-time. This role is vital to ensuring accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of patient care, which supports both the clinical team and patient outcomes.
Description of Duties
- Accurately documents patient histories, physical examinations, procedures, lab results, diagnoses, and treatment plans as dictated by the healthcare provider during patient visits in real-time.
- Ensures that all patient information is recorded and updated in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in compliance with legal, ethical, and organizational standards.
- Assists with gathering patient information, including reviewing medical histories and confirming information in patient records as needed.
- Assists the healthcare team by entering orders, prescriptions, and other necessary documentation into the system.
- Works closely with physicians and other healthcare staff to ensure seamless patient care and efficient workflows.
- Adheres to HIPAA regulations and maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reviews patient records to ensure accurate documentation and identify any discrepancies or issues that may need to be corrected.
- Plans, prepares, coordinates, and implements faxing, scanning, and phone communications related to patient care.
- The position is a clerical role and does not involve direct patient care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required EducationAssociate's degree from an accredited university.

Required ExperienceOne (1) year of directly related work experience, such as a transcriptionist or medical scribe.
Preferred ExperienceExperience as a medical scribe.EquipmentUse of standard office equipment.
Working ConditionsNeeds to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
OtherExceptional planning and organizational skills. Familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare practices. Strong typing and data entry skills in a fast paced environment. Proficient in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work well under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor.
