Description of WorkThe UNL Schmoker Reading Center is seeking a Reading Center Specialist for work on the expanding reading, writing, and literacy professional development as part of the center's expansion into greater Nebraska. We aim to provide Nebraska schools and communities with professional development and support to prepare all students for reading success by systematically delivering high-quality instruction tailored to meet their needs.Responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with the co-directors to support and align all activities with the mission and goals of the Schmoker Reading Center.
  • Development of content, teacher training materials, and implementation support procedures as part of the outreach project.
  • Conduct observations, professional development sessions, and coaching in schools across the state.
  • Provide consultation, training, and on-site implementation support services to school districts.
  • Provide reading professional development opportunities for school district and ESU staff and community professionals.
  • Create a Resource Library with current publications and resources related to the field of continuous improvement.
  • Stay informed of evidence-based instructional materials, strategies, interventions, assessments, and technology for improved reading outcomes for ALL students.
  • Be aware of new research and best practices around reading, writing, and literacy within Multi-tiered Systems of Support.
  • Maintain a database of all contacts and training and supports provided.
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning opportunities at the state and national level.
  • Work involves travel to schools, but some work can be done remotely and through virtual conferencing.

  • Master's degree in Education, Psychology, Child Development or related field
  • Seven (7) years of experience working in a school district and/or working with educators and families.
  • Knowledge and understanding of reading interventions, core reading instruction, and reading development.
  • Independent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer/client service skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Must have the ability to: use word-processing, database, and presentation software.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to keep accurate records. Knowledge of Nebraska school systems.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a reading coach or reading specialists preferred.
  • Eight (8) years of experience teaching specifically in grades 4-8.
  • Knowledge of providing professional development.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Subject to DOT approved pre-employment & random testing for alcohol and controlled substances.
