Certification, as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist, by an accredited agency.Job Description:Follow the laboratory's procedures when training new employees on specimen handling, test analyses,& reporting results; work with the Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine & Blood Bank Managerto develop & maintain policies & procedures that reflect best manufacturing practices; initiate &implement new specialized Blood Bank testing to decrease test turnaround & improve patientoutcomes; support external agency inspections; demonstrate instrument operation & troubleshoot toensure proper functionality; perform annual employee direct observation of patient testing, instrumentmaintenance, & function checks to determine employee competency; assist with education of medicallaboratory scientist students, medical lab technician students, residents, & other hospital personnel;document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's performancespecifications; report STATS or critical results to providers; adhere to the laboratory's quality controlpolicies, document quality control activities, instrument & procedural calibrations & maintenanceperformed; ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, & opened dates; maintainrecords that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patientspecimens; follow accrediting agency standards CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, JointCommission & safety guidelines; & participate in safety training sessions & attend & contribute toLab & Blood Bank meetings. A System Blood Bank Specialist - Lead at UofL Health plays a criticalrole in supporting the education and training of medical technologists/clinical laboratory scientists,medical technology students, residents, and other healthcare professionals who rotate or shadowwithin the Blood Bank department. The Lead’s teaching responsibilities are conducted in a clinicalsetting and involve hands-on, practical instruction. Their teaching responsibilities are not conducted ina classroom setting. Specifically, the Technical Lead for System’s Blood Bank provides orientation tothe laboratory environment, explains procedures, workflows, and instrumentation, and ensures thatthose rotating through the department gain a clear understanding of Blood Bank operations.
