Job Description:The Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency and 100% uptime. This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues. The CE serves as an expert technical resource reporting to a site’s Critical Facility Manager and interacting with onsite operations team and any third-party vendors.The CE is able to manage small-to-medium impacting projects from conception to completion. These projects involve large amounts of independent work as well as collaboration with external support groups including engineering, automation, processing, and finance in both local and global settings. The CE will be tasked with creating and delivering on key milestones, obtaining and tracking quotes for all necessary costs, and documenting project results for future implementation at other facilities. The goals of such projects are for the CE to drive innovation and resiliency while reducing operational costs in the facilities.The CE directs, trains, and supports site Operations Technicians in their role of providing hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations. Implementation and execution of site/equipment-specific training exercises is also expected. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPS’s, PDU’s, AHU’s, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFD’s, and building automation systems.Responsibilities:Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in a data center.Operate independently with limited direct management.Act as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within the data center, escalating to the Critical Facility Manager as needed.Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures.Troubleshoot and report of facility and data sever-level events within internal SLA.Create and deploy new standard practices for Critical Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.Provide training and guidance to Critical Operations TechniciansEnsure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and PDC employees.Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audienceBasic Qualifications:Technical college degree or equivalent work experience in lieu of degreeFour or more years of data center experience or equivalent experienceCPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certification during employment.Preferred Qualifications:Six or more years of related experience in Data Centers or similar environment (i.e., critical facilities, military etc.)Two or more years’ experience leading or managing teamsKnowledge, Skills And Abilities:Strong background in electrical and mechanical systems design review, layout, installation, commissioning, and operations.Expert knowledge of NFPA Electrical, Fire and Life Safety and building codesExpert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and compliance issuesExpert knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e., lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA, and state regulations)Experienced with data trending / tracking and analysis and ability to rapidly learn and use PC based, integrated critical monitoring systemsStrong supervisor skillsExcellent communication skills, both written and oralExtensive hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial mechanical & electrical systems including480V Electrical Distribution SystemsChilled/Condenser Water PumpCRACs / CRAHs / DSEDiesel GeneratorsDomestic Water systems, including Backflow Prevention devicesEPMS / BMS SystemsFuel/Oil systems, Fuel/Oil Day tanks and Fuel/Oil Storage TanksHVAC equipmentKnowledge of NFPA 25, sprinkler and dry-stand pipe systems, including Emergency Fire Pump where applicableMedium Voltage SwitchgearPLC and relay logic controlsSTS / ATSUPS Systems / TypesVFD DrivesVRLA / Li-Ion Batteries and Monitoring SystemsWater Treatment SystemsWell/Vault or Sump PumpsProficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)Ability to train the electrical and mechanical teams on the systems and the proceduresAbility to conduct power & fire system capacity, safety and code compliance assessmentsAbility to operate in and promote a rigorous process-driven, team environmentAbility to logically analyze and solve problemsAbility to multi-task multiple projectsDetailed orientedPhysical Requirements:All physical requirements are expected with reasonable accommodationsWalk job sites in uneven terrainWork at heights and from laddersRegularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds; and participate in group lifts for 50 pounds or moreCoordinate body movements when using tools or equipmentReach and stretch to position equipment and fixtures while maintaining balanceBend or twist the body into unusual positions while workingPerform physical tasks all day without becoming overly tiredUse hands to manipulate small wires and objectsPush or pull heavy objects into positionWork in a noisy environmentWork at depths, such as under raised floorsBenefits:Competitive salary ($80K - $100K) and performance bonus program
