- Trains, develops, and monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of own employees through regularly scheduled safety meetings, one on one development, reminders, and disciplinary action, if necessary.
- Follows all requirements listed in the Supervisor Safety Procedure Manual (SSPM) including, but not limited to, safety training, emergency procedures, accident reporting and investigation, and employee observations.
- Ensures compliance of production staff with all policies and procedures, OSHA, and MSHA guidelines.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22.
- Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
- Understands that maintaining safety is very critical of all positions within the quarry and is the first consideration before starting work. It is the responsibility of the Assistant Plant Manager to enforce both MSHA and company rules and policies when working alone or with others and to educate subordinates on these rules and policies.
- Ensures departmental records retention and destruction needs remain compliant according to the Records Management Program. Leads may be required to assist support employees in completing the tasks outlined in the Records Management Program Manual.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Supervises, manages, and directs the selection, training, development, appraisal, and work assignments of own employees.
- Prioritizes, organizes, and delegates assignments.
- Trains and develops the foremen and hourly personnel. This includes recognizing and assessing the employees’ abilities to perform the job duties effectively and recommend, as well as initiate, development programs to achieve the employees’ full personal and production potential. An essential mission of the Assistant Plant Manager is to develop and promote employees from within the company when appropriate.
- Maintains consistent, fair, and equitable administration of disciplinary actions and communicates with the Plant Manager and Human Resources personnel regarding all disciplinary problems with employees. Consistently utilizes the company’s performance development process as needed to include corrective action plans, reviews, and commendations as needed. Understands and follows the company’s policy on Equal Employment Opportunity.
- Coordinates with Plant Manager, supervisors, and plant lead personnel on absences, vacations, etc. and properly schedules time off. Reviews and checks hourly employee recorded time for accuracy as well as justify the hours expended against product produced. Possesses the ability to organize and plan work for timely completion and eliminate excessive overtime.
- Initiates and executes an organized production schedule under the approval of the Plant Manager. Reports deficiencies, problems, schedule changes, etc. to Plant Manager. Maintains on-going communication with the Plant Manager regarding status of production, projects, etc.
- Ability to understand and personally evaluate the potential capacities of the equipment and make recommendations and adjustments to achieve monthly production goals.
- Averages 1000+ tons per hour (unless otherwise instructed) for both primary and secondary under normal operating conditions.
- Produces 150,000 to 250,000 tons of stone monthly as required by management/sales and production schedule.
- Maintains proper inventories of stone.
- Supervises sampling of stock piles, crusher discharge, crusher feed and complete testing as scheduled.
- Assures zero stone inventory contamination due to pile overruns, bad screens, crusher settings, etc.
- Uses plant clean-up material rather than saleable materials for road repair and other quarry projects.
- Ability to assist in preparation of budget and costing reports to operate the quarry in a cost-effective manner.
- Possesses the ability to operate mobile equipment safely and proficiently (loader, dozer, backhoe, off-road trucks, etc.) and properly trains employees to safely achieve optimal production potential of equipment. Ensures pre-shift exams are consistently and accurately completed on all mobile equipment and that equipment is not operated until safety and mechanical problems are corrected.
- Supervises completion of repairs per manufacturer’s specifications.
- Responds immediately to any incident with potential environmental impact.
- Makes recommendations to enhance environmental responsibility.
- Maintains meaningful records (correlates times, dates, utilization of equipment, etc.) of wear items such as screens, liners, belting, etc. Maintains tool inventory, purchase orders, accident reports, and employee absence reporting.
- Demonstrated ability of proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet graphics, etc.
- Maintains a high standard of quality products for customers and works closely with QC to ensure this happens.
- Maintains a high degree of integrity and conveys a positive public image of self and the company to the community.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
- Handles multiple projects simultaneously.
- Current North Carolina Driver’s License required
- Ability to obtain first aid/CPR certification
