Unlock your potential!Job Summary and QualificationsPOSITION SUMMARY:The Laboratory Supervisor may be responsible for one or more departments in the Laboratory (Microbiology, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry and Blood Bank). The Laboratory Supervisor performs testing of body fluids aiding in the diagnoses, evaluation and the treatment of patients. He/she must maintain the highest standards of all accrediting agencies. Performs related quality control and clerical work as required. Evaluates new procedures or methods under direct supervision of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Manager. Assists in training and orientation of personnel. Must be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site telephone or electronic consultation in order to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures of the Laboratory.POPULATION SERVED:Clinical Laboratory services performed on patients from Neonate to Geriatric ages.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Laboratory Supervisors Responsibility (General Supervisors responsibility - CMS)
  • Is responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel.
  • Must be onsite to provide direct supervision when high complex testing is performed by any personnel.
  • Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure the acceptable levels of analytic performance is maintained.
  • Assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
  • Providing orientation to all testing personnel.
  • Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.
Directs lab section staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Requests new and replacement staff as needed and as budget allows.
  • In conjunction with the Lab Director, interviews and reviews candidates for hire.
  • Oversees the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Prepares and maintains work schedules to provide adequate coverage.
  • Counsels or disciplines employees when indicated in accordance with policy and guidelines.
  • Teaches, supervises, delegates and serves as a resource person in accordance with the competency level of all staff members.
  • Ensures that employees are kept current with all training and retraining needs, and oversees competency testing of personnel.
  • Completes performance evaluations on time and sets reasonable, achievable goals for employees.
  • Ensures that all assigned duties of the staff are completed with timeliness and quality.
  • Addresses employee concerns and conflicts according to hospital policy.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are maintained.
  • Ensures that accreditation standards and requirements are communicated and followed.
  • Ensures that all safety policies and procedures are communicated and followed.
  • Communicates, supports, and models a service-oriented relationship with internal and external customers.
  • Assists in the performance improvement activities of the lab and hospital.
Oversees the technical aspects of the Laboratory.
  • Oversees the quality control activities for the technical section(s), ensuring that these activities are complete, accurately filled out, and performed and reported in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that all preventive maintenance and instrument performance checks are performed and recorded according to schedule.
  • Ensures that the procedure manual(s) is kept complete and up-to-date.
  • Together with the Lab Director, monitors compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Trains or assists in training other employees on the procedures of that section(s).
  • In conjunction with the Lab Director, is responsible for the formulation and execution of the policies and procedures for that section(s).
  • Maintains adequate knowledge of software / computers to complete work quickly and efficiently.
Performs clinical laboratory assays in one or more of the technical disciplines
  • Demonstrates good knowledge concerning techniques and theory.
  • Performs tests accurately and precisely according to written policies and procedures and established practices.
  • Learns and adapts well to new instrumentation and techniques.
  • Ensures that assay results are reported in a timely, legible, and meaningful format with appropriate reference values and/or interpretive comments and delivered to the appropriate clinical practitioner/clinical area.
  • Ensures that test selection and reference ranges are appropriate for the age of the patient.
  • Performs duties with minimal supervision, showing appropriate independent judgment.
Ensures timely availability of laboratory results
  • Organizes work and work area for efficiency of performance.
  • Performs work with sufficient speed to allow acceptable turnaround time of results.
  • Demonstrates good productivity as judged by efficient use of time and volume of testing and other duties performed.
  • Prioritizes work appropriate to relative importance and critical nature.
  • Immediately reports and documents critical values.
Ensures the quality of analyses through quality control, quality assurance, and maintenance activity.
  • Performs quality control activities appropriate to each assay performed, and responds appropriately to outlier results.
  • Successfully participates in proficiency testing activities in each technical area for which the employee has responsibilities.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance and repair of instrumentation.
  • Participates in preparation of calibrators, reagents and other materials.
Participates in training and educational activities for the laboratory.
  • Helps train new employees or those with less experience in a technical area.
  • Participates in providing in-service education for the laboratory and other hospital personnel.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring that various functions are performed during the work period.
  • Ensures that all QC functions needed for the shift are performed.
  • Ensures that all preventive maintenance functions are performed during the shift worked.
  • Maintains the Laboratories quality assurance and quality control program to meet laboratory-accrediting standards.
  • At least annually reviews all safety policies, procedures, and materials to maintain current knowledge of safety issues.
  • Practices safe work habits according to policies and standard procedures.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Performs testing without supervision for the pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical testing of waived, moderately complex and high-complex testing according to established standards of accreditation set forth by TJC, CLIA and C.A.P.

  • Two years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing. Full knowledge of the medical laboratory area is required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIESPreferred 2-3 years of leadership experience in a clinical laboratory environment. Ability to navigate through Word, PowerPoint and Excel.SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIESAbility to relate professionally with people, analytical abilities, ability to problem solve, train employees and to motivate others. Organizational skills, research skills, time management skills, written and verbal communications and supervisory skills required. Excellent customer service skills required.
