Overview:The Manager of Safety - RI is responsible for leading a team of safety professionals and responsible for facilitating the development and execution of the Rhode Island safety management plan. This includes ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, adopted industry standards, and PPL Corporate Safety Policies. This position is expected to establish and execute all aspects of the role in a manner that promotes the continuing development of a constructive culture where each employee has a high level of accountability for their personal safety and the safety of all those employees reporting to them. This position is expected to have both a long-range, strategic vision for on-going safety performance improvement and short-term, tactical plans for supporting the day-to-day safety process. This position is responsible to proactively monitor for regulatory changes and industry best practices and develop recommendations to best position Rhode Island Energy for compliance and continuous safety performance improvement. This position is also responsible to establish metrics, key performance indicators (KPIs), goals, processes, and systems to monitor and evaluate the safety performance of Rhode Island Energy employee and contractors, identify significant trends, and recommend and implement plans and programs to continuously improve safety performance. Responsibilities:
  • Maintain all Rhode Island Energy safety-related policies, programs, processes, procedures and records in a state of full compliance as required by federal, state, and local regulations (e.g. OSHA, DOT, PUC) and adopted industry standards (e.g. NFPA, EPRI, IEEE).
  • Systematically evaluate internal safety performance and conduct benchmarking to determine industry best practices. Identify, initiate and facilitate large-scale change management of high-impact safety initiatives.
  • Supervise a team of safety professionals that support incident investigations, safety committee meetings, field observations, and other on-going safety operations activities.
  • Establish, and maintain effective incident case management and reporting.
  • Support Rhode Island Energy senior and line management with the development of strategic safety plans, goals, and objectives.
  • Evaluate work methods and training programs to ensure consistency and alignment with safety rules and human performance elements.
  • Establish and maintain clear and effective processes for supporting and responding to emergence (e.g. first responder support, conducting emergency investigations, issuing safety alerts)
  • All positions in which driving is an essential function of the job, regardless if the job code is marked safety sensitive or not, will also be included as safety sensitive.
  • May be assigned a Rhode Island Energy emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.
  • The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. Assigned work location may change. In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.

  • Complies with all policies and standards Qualifications:
Required EducationBachelor's Degree Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or related technical field.Required Experience
  • 6+ yearsrequired work experience
  • 5+ years experience in industrial hygiene or safety or supervising or managing a front-line, field, or line organization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • A minimum of 1-year experience managing remote teams.
  • A minimum of 5 years in the utility or utility construction industry.
  • Successful completion of a board safety certification such as Certified Safety. professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
