Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, located in Monroe, NC, is looking for a Plastics Process Engineer. Charlotte Pipe and Foundry is a leading manufacturer of pipe and fittings. Investment in the latest tooling and machinery make it possible for us to meet increasing demand for our products and to provide the highest quality pipe and fittings in the industry.Position Description:This plastics process engineer will focus on the development of new and the maintenance of existing production processes, for extruded and molded products. A key area will be quality issues as viewed by our internal and external customers This position will be located at Charlotte Pipe’s Monroe, NC facility. Hours are 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and reports to the Technical/Design Manager.Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate new materials for injection molded fittings and pipe extrusion.
  • Implement process changes to include, establishing process conditions,
  • procedures, training of associates, costing and BOM updating.
  • Setup and conduct process capability studies.
  • Review, set up trials and recommendations on new pieces of equipment and tooling to improve production efficiency and costs.
  • Design, implementation, and analysis of experiments to solve production problems.
  • Evaluate part quality as it relates to specific processes.
  • Work with suppliers to establish purchasing specifications and control of incoming materials related to new products and process changes.
  • Make recommendations for improving the reliability of components, and processes.
  • Acquire, and analyze data. Prepare diagrams, charts, drawings, calculations, and reports for defining reliability problems and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Root cause analysis and implementation of corrective action for process related concerns.
  • Assist Quality manager in establishing, implementing and maintaining the quality management system. Support the Quality Inspectors to ensure that products and processes comply with the relevant requirements of the quality management system.
  • Develop quality plans for new and existing product lines.
  • Will work with the quality department to develop test methods, and training programs.
  • Responsible for continual improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as 5S, Kaizen, and lean methods, etc. Root cause analysis and implementation of corrective action for process related concerns.
  • Assist with customer complaints as required.
Education and Training Requirements:
  • Four-year degree in polymer or plastics engineering, or related field of study.
  • Knowledge of statistics, Lean manufacturing, and ISO quality systems.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Solid Works or other design and drawing software .
  • Mini Tab experience.
  • Quality system training and knowledge
  • Process reliability training and knowledge
  • Knowledge of plastics test methods including tensile properties, Izod impact, melt fusion testing, and long-term properties testing.
  • Basic knowledge of plastics pipe extrusion and injection molding processes. Experience with vinyl compounds would be helpful.
