Burlington School District is seeking a passionate Nurse - School Substitute to provide school health services in grades PK-12. School nurses strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students and staff; identifying, assisting, overseeing, and collaborating with other school personnel in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning of individual students; and collaborating with other school personnel to promote health education and a healthy learning environment for students and staff. Specifically, the school nurse organizes, provides, and/or oversees the provision of health assessments for individual students and referrals for health management or treatment.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develops, provides, and/or oversees direct health services and/or health counseling to assist students, families, and staff in making informed decisions on choices related to health.
  • Develops, provides, and/or oversees the implementation of student healthcare plans, health management protocols, and policies for all students with health needs, and recommends modifications to the school program.
  • Interprets and/or oversees the interpretation of a student's health status to parents/guardians and school personnel.
  • Identifies or assists in identification, referrals, and follow through on child abuse and neglect reporting as required by law. Identifies and refers students for psychosocial and substance abuse issues and evaluates interventions.
  • Preventative Health: Maintains, evaluates, interprets, and/or oversees the review of individual student health records.
  • Develops, implements, and/or oversees the implementation of procedures and protocols for the prevention and management of injuries and acute and chronic illness.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through the development and/or implementation of early detection, intervention, and preventative immunization programs, surveillance reporting, as appropriate, to the Vermont Department of Health, and follow-up of contagious diseases. Provides health information to individuals, school-related groups, student classes, and community organizations.
  • Using the nursing process, identifies, assesses, plans, intervenes, and evaluates student health concerns, including physical and mental health needs and injuries. Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs to students.
  • Provides health assessments, including screenings, referrals and follow up for health factors impacting student education. This includes state mandated screenings such as vision, hearing, and others directed by the AOE.
  • Provides chronic disease management and education, including such nursing procedures as ventilator care, gastrostomy feedings, tracheostomy care, catheterizations, etc., and provides student specific training and delegation to appropriate personnel as needed and updates training on a regular basis. This includes planning and implementing Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHP) and services for children with disabilities and/or health conditions that interfere with learning, including medication administration and monitoring.
  • Directly and indirectly provides health education, health resources, and curriculum recommendations. Participates as the health specialist on school teams (i.e. safety Team, 504, IEP etc.) and recommends provisions for a healthy school environment conducive to learning. Reports suspected physical and sexual abuse and neglect of children as mandated by law
  • Provides health counseling for staff and provides leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs.
  • Coordinates school/community health activities and serves as liaison between school, home, community, and health care providers.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence working with diverse groups across race, ethnicity, religion, gender, class, and sexuality to communicate health needs to students and families who do not speak English.
  • Assists in the formation of health policies, procedures, goals, and objectives for the school district. Engages in research and evaluation of school health services in order to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
  • Utilizes equipment for medical diagnosis and treatment, general office equipment (including the computer) for documentation, presentation materials, organization and management.
  • Assists the school in complying with OSHA standards, ADA, FERPA, HIPPA, and Right-To-Know requirements; become familiar with relevant OSHA standards and make appropriate recommendations for their implementation.
  • The school nurse performs their duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, the Vermont State Nurse Practice Act, other state and local statutes and/or regulations applicable to school nursing practice and adheres to school district policies.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education & Experience:
  • Minimum Required: Bachelor of Science from an accredited school of Nursing
  • Preferred: Master of Science from an accredited school of Nursing
  • Certification Required: Current CPR/AED. Current Vermont RN License. Agency of Education (AOE) endorsement or eligible for 5440-65 within 2 months of hire.
  • Minimum Required: 6000 hours of clinical nursing experience beyond nursing education or NCSN certification
