Position SummaryOrganization: Lew Wallace Elementary SchoolLocation: 513 6th St. NW Albuquerque, NM 87102An Off-Campus Work-Study Position - MUST have a Work-Study AwardThis job is to work as a reading, writing, and math tutor under the direction of Lew Wallace Elementary Kindergarten-Fifth Grade teachers to provide academic and emotional support through direct instruction, guided practice, and games. Students come in at many levels and being able to give them small group instruction at their level and more adult attention increases their socio-emotional skills and academic success. You may also be asked to prepare or organize tutoring materials.We love working with our students and are seeking tutors who would feel the same way.
Minimum QualificationsEnrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Preferred Qualifications●Have passed the APS background check
●Be able to read, write and follow directions in English (Knowledge of Espanol helpful, but not necessary)
●Be able to be a role model (model appropriate language and behavior)
●Be reliable
●Be available 3-5 times a week at the same time. (times can be adjusted by semester)
●Be available for a short training, possibly on a Saturday and some ongoing training during the teachers' prep times.
●Be tolerant and respectful of different cultural perspectives.
●Be willing to utilize positive discipline techniques.
●Be willing to follow classroom procedures and rules.
●Be able to stay off your cell phone while with students.
●For English speakers, be able to work between 8:40 am and 3:10 pm (to 4:00 if you work in Genius Hour)
●Be patient and have a positive attitude.
●Be able to ask questions.
●Be hardworking and self-directed.
