Engages in inpatient referral activities for assigned medical offices. Ensures accuracy and effectively manages patient referrals for specialty care and/or medical tests. Develops effective referral processes to ensure a high level of service and patient satisfaction.Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Coordinates all medical referrals from practice physicians to specialists. Maintains referral log/referral tracking system and distributes to the appropriate provider and/or department. Enters and tracks referral data in the system.
- Identifies and expedites urgent care situations by handling hospital admission forms, transmitting information to appropriate agencies, and coordinating administrative functions.
- Maintains records and provides patient outreach for missed appointments.
- Maintains referral log and tracking system and distributes to the appropriate provider and/or department.
- Obtains authorizations from insurance carriers, when required.
- Schedules follow-up/referral appointments and completes requisitions for tests. Schedules pre-op visits. Keeps patient informed.
- Transmits requests/forms to payors, specialists, and patients as needed.
- Answers incoming calls in a professional manner and providers back up to the front desk as needed or assigned.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 1-2 years 2 years experience in a medical office or ambulatory health setting performing billing, referrals or related administrative tasks
- No special certification, registration or licensure required
- Requires effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess basic computer skills including working knowledge and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, database systems, electronic health records, and patient scheduling systems.
- Must be familiar with medical terminology normally demonstrated through medical terminology course completion.
