
Lab Technician

- $28.00-32.00 per hour
- Contract
- Full-time
- Monday- Friday with rotating weekends required
- Swing Shift, Must be ok with working either 1pm-9pm or 3pm-12am
- Accessions specimens according to established priority.
- Preform quality testing of samples (values of red blood cells, pathogen testing, platelets, donor materials)
- Checks formalin waste for effective neutralization prior to disposal.
- Checks test requisition forms for complete information and obtains missing information if necessary
- Cleans and stocks Gross Room.
- Compares information from test requisition form with specimen labels and resolves identification problems.
- Distributes accessioned specimens to appropriate locations.
- Enters patient demographic information into LIS and orders appropriate examination code.
- Maintains appropriate health and safety standards as directed by federal/state and accrediting agency laws/guidelines.
- Maintains instruments and equipment in the Gross and Frozen Section Rooms.
- Manipulates and edits computer fields to ensure proper billing, unique accessioning number, and correct documentation for each specimen received.
- Participates in quality assurance projects as appropriate
- Receives all specimens into the lab from a variety of sources and routes.
- Retrieves specimens from surgery and clinics.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent and 3 years of direct experience in a blood testing lab
- Bachelors in Science or related field and 1 year of lab experience
- Must be ok with working with human specimens, must be ok with sight of blood
- Ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical and nontechnical staff
- Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job
- Knowledge of basic laboratory testing procedures, laboratory precautions, and use and care of common laboratory equipment
- Knowledge of instruments, methods and materials used in a hospital laboratory
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of various nontechnical needs of a laboratory, usually acquired from a combination of previous work experience and/or schooling
- Skills: Data entry
