We are currently looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Sustaining) in the United States.We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Sustaining) to join a dynamic engineering team focused on building secure, efficient, and resilient open-source software. This role offers the opportunity to tackle real-world challenges in container security, Linux packaging, and DevOps tooling while automating processes to eliminate recurring issues. The ideal candidate will have a hands-on approach, collaborating with global teams to deliver high-quality software, mentor peers, and influence best practices across the development lifecycle. Working in a fast-paced, remote-first environment, you will contribute directly to shaping a secure software supply chain that impacts developers and enterprises worldwide. This role combines technical rigor, innovation, and the chance to leave a lasting mark on open-source security.Accountabilities
  • Sustaining Engineering – Triage, investigate, and resolve software vulnerabilities (CVEs) while implementing automation to prevent future occurrences.
  • Package & Image Development – Build and maintain Linux packages (APKs) and container images, ensuring high quality, security, and minimal bloat.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship – Work closely with project managers and global engineering teams; mentor junior engineers and share expertise within the community.
  • Testing & Quality Assurance – Develop and enhance testing frameworks and automation processes to maintain confidence in software releases.
  • Tooling & Innovation – Contribute to and utilize internal tools such as melange, apko, Wolfi OS, and Chainguard Images for software development and deployment.
  • Community & Knowledge Sharing – Participate in open-source communities, contribute to best practices, and support knowledge transfer across teams.
Requirements
  • 4+ years of software engineering or DevOps experience, with hands-on Linux packaging (APK, DEB, RPM) preferred.
  • Strong expertise in container technologies, including building, debugging, and securing images.
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes (manifests, Helm, Kustomize) and Terraform for infrastructure and deployment automation.
  • Skilled in at least one programming language (Go, Python, C, or C++).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in vulnerability management, supply chain security, or open-source contributions is a plus.
