Growing together.The Director of Data Engineering is the leader of the reporting, analytics, and data team for OptumCare’s Midwest region. The leader in this role is focused on developing and supporting advanced analytics to improve health outcomes for our members driven by insightful data delivered to the provider network. This role is additionally responsible for leading a team of data developers and engineers, a team of business analysts across HEDIS quality, risk adjustment, and care value, as well as BI developers, who are focused on leveraging various data applications and tools to drive overall value while maintaining strict data quality, business requirements, and appropriate project sizing.This role will be make critical decisions focused on development of innovative reporting and analytics, developing proofs of concept for presentation to regional leaders, support the integration of complex data sources into Optum’s data platform with a mix of different infrastructure (i.e. on-prem, cloud), and overall optimize the region’s data processes, standards, and frameworks in support of the growing Midwest region and overall provider network. This role is critical in ensuring clinical, operational, and healthcare data is accurate, accessible, and actionable for delivering value-based care, population health management, quality improvement, and regulatory reporting.You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead and mentor a talented team of data analysts, engineers, and developers fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data management roadmap that aligns with organizational priorities such as clinical quality, operational efficiency, and patient engagement.
  • Collaborate with clinical, operational, IT, and quality leaders to understand data needs and deliver scalable solutions.
  • Collaborate with national IT teams to implement a secure, compliant, and scalable data infrastructure to support the organization’s growing data needs
  • Build common frameworks and best practices in code development, deployment and automation/orchestration of data pipelines
  • Identify, design, and champion process improvements throughout the processing lifecycle for data quality initiatives ensuring data integrity, to include automating manual processes and optimizing data delivery for greater scalability
  • Own and manage the deliverables assigned to the data analytics and engineering team, ensuring accurate, concise documentation of the code base including data ingestion and enrichment pipelines that support critical analytics
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, CMS, NCQA, and other healthcare regulations related to clinical and administrative data.
  • Work closely with the analytics and clinical and business performance teams to ensure timely and accurate data feeds for dashboards, predictive models, and population health tools.

  • 7+ years of experience with solid SQL skills and experience with SSRS, Tableau, and PowerBI for data transformation, visualization, and orchestration
  • 4+ years of experience in Azure Data Factory (ADF): building complex, parameterized pipelines, integrating with Azure services
  • 4+ years of experience with proficiency in Snowflake: data modeling, performance tuning, Snowpipe, Streams & Tasks, SnowConvert, and security features
  • 4+ years of experience working with healthcare datasets, including claims data, clinical registries, and patient engagement platforms
  • 2+ years of experience with building and scaling high-performing data analytics and data engineering teams
  • 2+ years of experience with Healthcare industry knowledge and experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Health Informatics, or other technology related fields
  • 2+ years of healthcare data ecosystems, including EHRs, claims data, and clinical workflows
  • 2+ years of healthcare data standards: EDI, HL7, X12, FHIR, ICD-10, CPT, and HIPAA compliance
  • 2+ years of experience with value-based care models, risk adjustment (HCC), NCQA HEDIS quality standards, affordability metrics, and payer-provider data exchange. Familiarity with A.I. and machine learning

The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment.
