We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.Role Overview:The Environmental Manager 2 position serves as an industrial waste compliance inspector, providing technical and regulatory guidance to IDEM staff, the section supervisor, and to external entities. This position directly interacts with the public and regulated community and is critical to ensure that industrial waste is correctly identified and properly managed. Industrial waste compliance inspectors evaluate compliance activities for various industrial activities including, but not limited to, non-MSW landfills, industrial composting facilities, waste tire storage & processing sites, and auto salvage facilities. Inspectors regularly provide public outreach by educating facilities on programs such as the Compliance and Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) program, and the Indiana Clean Yard program.EM2s carry the bulk of the inspection workload for the section, including responding to public concerns received through the complaint clearinghouse in a timely manner. The ideal candidate is comfortable asking questions and building rapport with the regulated community, possesses strong report writing skills, can independently manage their workload, and is one who embraces change. This position required driving a state vehicle; a valid Indiana drivers license is required.Salary Statement:The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.Essential Job Responsibilities:

Conducts multi-media inspections at auto salvage facilities.
Conducts compliance and complaint inspections at other businesses and facilities throughout the State, including: tire sites, restricted waste landfills; Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) sites, and associated industrial waste facility, industrial waste solidification processors, and at other sites identified as section inspection initiatives.
Conducts multi-media screenings and analyzes pollution prevention opportunities.
Provides technical and regulatory assistance on solid and hazardous waste.
Prepares accurate and detailed inspection reports and an apppropriate enforcement response or referral.

Preferred Experience:

At least two (2) years of experience in an environmental or environmental public health field

Requirements:

A minimum of a baccalaureate degree in environmental science, environmental policy or a related area;
knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of industrial waste and ability to apply these principles as they relate to any program;
knowledge of the physical sciences as they relate to industrial waste;
ability to think critically and in an analytical manner;
ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
ability to work well independently and in a goup;
dependability;
ability to effectively interact with local, state, and federal groups and government representatives;
ability to establish and maintaian effective working relationships with staff and deal tactfully with a variety of individuals including members of the public, members of the regulated community, and representatives from city, state, and federal governments;
Inspection experience
ability to interpret rules/regulations as they relate to industrial waste and related programs;
