POWER PLANT OPERATIONS INTERN
Our intern program is designed to increase future employment potential for prospects while providing a valuable resource to the business. This Summer Internship will appeal to proactive and self-motivated Energy Program students with a genuine desire to learn about the energy business and industry. During the internship, candidates will work a rotating shift and participate in routine and non-routine operational activities in a functioning power plant and have real responsibilities.We are looking for self-driven, high-caliber individuals who can grasp complex processes and issues and connect information to deliver solutions. In return, the City will provide the support, guidance, and opportunities to help our interns be successful.NATURE OF WORK
This is an intern level position assisting in the operation of high-pressure steam boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment at the municipal electric generating plant. This is a short term, non-benefited position that allows the incumbent to gain knowledge of operations of power plant equipment.Work involves participating in the operation of power plant equipment. Work also involves assisting in plant maintenance activities and other duties as assigned. Work is performed under general guidance and is performed according to established policies, procedures, and regulations. Supervision is received from administrative superiors and trained operators.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
  • Participates in operation of high-pressure coal fired steam boilers, turbines, generators, and a variety of auxiliary equipment
  • Maintain awareness to ascertain any malfunction in equipment; assists with immediate initial remedial measures and reports malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Participates in inspection rounds throughout the plant to observe equipment and trouble shoot problems, recording levels, pressures, and temperatures.
  • Sets up coal scales, feeders, and pulverizes for operation.
  • Assists with maintaining fuel supply of coal and natural gas; monitors hydraulic and gas pressures.
  • Maintains correct steam, fuel, air, and vacuum pressures; observes for leaks in boiler and pipes; checks water level in low- and high-pressure heaters.
  • Reads steam temperatures and pressure gauges, transfer data to written and electronic data to log sheet.
  • Operates water softeners; reverse osmosis units; unloads lime and carbon trucks; cleans and lubricates all equipment and components; unloads bottom and fly ash and loads trucks.
  • Performs maintenance and repair duties as assigned.
  • Operates and cleans scrubber and lime slaking equipment.
  • Performs checks and assists in trouble shooting of simple cycle dual fuel combustion turbines and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job and other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in the Lockout/Tagout safety program and follows safety protocols.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge of the operation of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and of necessary safety precautions applicable to the work.
  • Knowledge of the operation of simple cycle dual fuel combustion turbines and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Ability to analyze data relating to the operation of plant equipment
  • Ability to react calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to recognize malfunctions in equipment.
  • Ability to participate in plant maintenance activities.
  • Ability to learn to safely operate Power Industrial Vehicles (PIV), including but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, scissor lift, skid steer, crane and aerial lift devices.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn and utilize various computer software programs necessary to perform the job.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Employees must be willing to be trained on and retain the knowledge to safely work in a complex electric generating plant.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, electronically and in writing.
  • Able to use PPE as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Candidates must be currently enrolled and pursuing a technical degree in Energy Generation, Applied Process Technology, or related field with interest in entering the power plant operations field following graduation.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver’s License when operating a vehicle.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed in an outdoor/indoor plant environment under varying weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below zero to above 100 degrees. Position requires the ability to work in adverse climate conditions and the physical nature of the work may require climbing in and out of mills, boilers, and walking on grated and elevated surfaces
  • Some occasional exposure to fumes, high noise levels, chemicals, working at heights and in confined spaces, fall hazards, hazardous materials, dust, and paint.
  • Interaction with co-workers is an everyday occurrence
  • Hours of work may vary and involve late hours, weekends and rotating shifts.
  • Work may involve lifting, climbing, and carrying of equipment and materials up to 40-60 lbs.
  • Work will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Other hazards that may be encountered are high traffic areas where trucks, loaders, and rail cars are moving and being loaded or unloaded.
