DESCRIPTIONThe Core Networking team is looking for a Sr. Optical Network Development Engineer to join our Network Product Development (NPD) Interconnect team. As a member of The Amazon Core Networking team, you'll have a unique opportunity to shape the development of one of the world's largest and most complex optical networks.
Our networks will enable us to continue to scale the existing services, and to enable new services. You'll be chartered with leading the development of innovative optical solutions, which will change how we build optical infrastructure to support Amazon's ever growing capacity requirements. You'll drive a step-change in Amazon's ability to provision, manage and monitor the network.
AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. We own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking's goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.

- Focuses on ambiguous problem areas in existing or new network architecture and systems development initiatives, propose and deliver projects that have a significant business and/or customer impact. -
- Drive mindful discussions with customers and peers, be a key influencer in team strategy.
- Drive vendors/manufacturers to design new hardware and software features and drive the implementation plans for incorporating them into the network.
- Define system level and component level specifications for suppliers
- Automate optical test plans and qualify optical solutions.
- Work with network operations team in identifying operation issues and improving quality of the interconnect solutionsA day in the life
On an everyday basis as an engineer in our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers' requirement on interconnect solutions, and work backwards to devise hardware solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with sister teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.About the team
The NPD Interconnects team is part of the Network Product Development (NPD) Platform org in AWS and is responsible for DAC, AEC, and optical links in our fleet. We own developing technologies that enable interconnect solutions for our customers while establishing supply diversity, driving down cost, and raising the performance bar of our links in the fleet. To achieve this we design and maintain qualification software and hardware infrastructure, work with vendors to co-develop their products to fit our needs, and create monitoring tools and alarming to ensure the health of the network. Our team is highly motivated to help support and develop new team members in both leadership principles and technical skills, which has helped our team grow quickly in the past few years. Our leadership team ensures that projects are assigned accordingly to challenge team members in both ambiguity and complexity to gain the expertise required to grow their scope and impact.Working at AWS in the Core Networking Team

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:Cupertino, CA, USABASIC QUALIFICATIONS- Masters/PhD degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physic, Computer Engineering, or equivalent with 5+ years' of closely related experience.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience on optical system and network design
- 5+ years of experience with optical protocols and technologies
- 2+ years of experience developing test scripts for optics validation and characterization
- 3+ years of experience working with optical protocols and technologiesPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- PhD or Masters preferred
- Expertise in hardware and systems design and development
- Expertise in debugging and troubleshooting Experience working with ODM and CM suppliers of Optical Modules
- Significant experience in the product development lifecycle
- Proven track record of innovating or inventing network solutions to business problems
- Meets/exceeds Amazon's leadership principles requirements for this roles

The base pay for this position ranges from $127,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600/year in our highest geographic market.
