Successfully completes structured training within eight to eighteen months to be retained in classification and/or promoted to a Laboratory Animal Technician.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCEHigh School diploma or GED equivalent with relevant animal work in a professional or farm setting desired.LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATIONValid North Carolina driver's license.American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level preferred.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS1. Feeds, waters, and dispenses bedding for all animal species according to specific requirements and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Distinguishes between different varieties of animal food and bedding.2. Observes animals and recognizes signs of illness, discomfort, and/or distress. Alerts veterinary staff to animal's condition.3. Maintains sanitary animal housing equipment and facility according to SOPs to achieve a state of functional readiness.4. Monitors environment of animal facility and completes building/room log sheets and or reports daily tasks and conditions in electronic system.5. Assembles animal cage equipment and observes equipment for evidence of needed repairs.6. Safely handles all animal species while maintaining proper identification and location.7. Completes and documents animal census on a weekly basis.8. Communicates pertinent information to clinical, supervisory, and management personnel verbally.9. Provides species-specific environmental enrichment items according to schedules.10. Reads, reviews, and follows all SOPs associated with position and campus specific procedures.11.
