JCC Greater Boston is seeking a highly motivated, organized and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Waterfront Director for Camp Grossman, our premier Summer Day Camp. As the Waterfront Director, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all campers participating in waterfront activities all while enjoying our beautiful wooded, lakefront environment. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the mission of JCC Greater Boston and make a positive impact on the lives of children.Orientation takes place the week of June 17th and ends with Visiting Day (a pre-camp visit for all campers and families to meet staff) on Sunday, June 23. The regular camp season begins June 24 and ends August 16 (with the option to work the following “9th Week” for additional pay). The camp day runs from 8:15 AM - 4:15 PM, Monday through Friday, with 3 or 4 staff meetings on various Monday afternoons or evenings. The Waterfront Director works late, keeping the waterfront open to families and/or campers on 6 - 10 Family Nights and Late Nights throughout the summer. While we prefer staff who can start Orientation Week and work the entire regular season, we may consider quality candidates who may have conflicting obligations.Responsibilities:
  • Swim programming, staff management, and communication
  • Plan and implement staff orientation and training schedule – including in-service training for teaching and lifeguarding skills
  • Create Swim programming – including levels, task analysis, partnering with administration for purchasing materials needed
  • Manage and teach waterfront staff to use all parts of swim programming, including new camper swim evaluations (internal use), red binders tracking system (internal use), and progress sheets and ribbons (external use)
  • Watch the beach – first aid, lost campers, late-comers, prepare for the next period transition, support instructors during class time
  • Create all lifeguard and teaching schedules and assignments
  • Work cooperatively with the Waterfront Operations Director Emeritus
  • Oversee the Head Lifeguards
  • Oversee the Pathways Program Swim coordinator
  • Keep records of staff certifications and share them with the supervisor
  • Oversee and proofread all camper progress reports
  • All communication with families
  • All communication with camp staff
  • Create and Practice Emergency Action Plan with the swim staff
  • Complete the evaluation process with each staff member
  • Work in partnership with peers and camp leadership to provide a happy, safe, and memorable summer for children
  • Always ensure camper safety, both in and out of the water, setting a tone that emphasizes waterfront safety while encouraging fun
  • Teach children about waterfront rules and safety practices
Supervisory Responsibilities:Supervisory responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Supervises all Waterfront Staff including but not limited to
  • Waterfront Operations
  • Assistant Waterfront Director(s)
  • Waterfront Inclusion (Pathways) Coordinator
  • Head Lifeguards
  • All other Waterfront Staff
  • Trains all supervisees
  • Evaluates all supervisees twice per summer
Requirements
  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree or related experience
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.Skills and Abilities:
  • Must have up-to-date Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certification no later than June 1st
  • Experience directing/supervising a busy swim program and staff, and teaching swimming and supervising a busy waterfront area
  • Excellent group management and leadership skills
  • Outstanding project management skills from design to implementation, managing deadlines with great attention to detail and maintaining high-quality standards
  • Ability to multitask and manage situations effectively and diplomatically; ability to adapt to evolving needs and circumstances
  • Must be a self-starter who takes the initiative
  • Superb interpersonal and active listening skills
  • Works well independently and with others, building/sustaining collaborative working relationships
  • Ability to build strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

Physical Requirements: Able to work in person. Able to be outside (lakeside) in all temperatures for the workday. Able to work well in a busy, dynamic and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Able to lift and carry objects weighing 30-40 pounds. Able to sit and kneel; getting down at eye level with children regularly. Must be able to act and move with quickness and agility. Correctly perform and describe aquatic skills for demonstration purposes. Carry equipment (forty pounds or less) from the supply shed to the swimming area and return. Swim a minimum of 500 yards.Tread water for 10 minutes. Lift and support an adult out of the water. Able to throw a floatation device twenty feet.
