Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.We are seeking a Senior Environmental Health & Safety Engineer to join our growing team. As a key member of our EHS team, this site-based role will champion environmental, health and safety initiatives at our Devens, Massachusetts campus.This team member will:
  • Support EHSS leadership in the development of a comprehensive EHSS strategy
  • Support production and research & development teams in hazard identification and mitigation efforts to enable safe and productive work
  • Work closely with test engineers and production teams to perform detailed safety reviews of complex hazardous operations (Test Readiness Reviews) to ensure safe execution
  • Lead or assist in incident investigations including immediate mitigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action development and closure
  • Provide guidance and interpretation on relevant OSHA standards, life safety codes and standards, safety systems, and risk assessment tools
  • Develop standards, programs, procedures, and training for assigned topics, including:
  • o Machine Guarding/Safety
  • o PPE
  • o Hoisting and Rigging
  • o Control of hazardous Energy
  • o Work at Height
  • o Cryogenics
  • o Compressed Gases
  • o Powered Industrial Trucks
  • Develop other EHSS standards, programs, procedures, and training as assigned
  • Develop, implement, and support environmental programs as assigned
  • Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards to identify and correct hazards and ensure compliance
  • Routinely assess facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct hazards and ensure compliance
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, spills, etc.)
  • Lead investigation of injuries/illnesses and other EHSS-related incidents; assist contractors in the management and analyses of injuries/illnesses and other incidents, including near misses, that occur on site
  • Lead audit and assurance activities to verify the effectiveness of EHSS-related programs (i.e., Permit to Work, Control of Hazardous Energy, Work at Height, Critical Lifts)
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental, Safety & Health or a related technical field
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in a safety role in a high-risk industry
  • Working knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations applicable to production and research and development activities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Strong facilitation skills and ability to work from a position of credible influence based on health and safety knowledge versus a position of authority
  • Record of continual improvement of safety programs, practices, and procedures
Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, or equivalent)
  • Advanced degree in in Safety & Health or related technical field
  • Advanced skills in electrical safety including high voltage and power plant design
  • Working knowledge of energy-based hazard recognition principles and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP)
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel and work extended/irregular hours to support mission critical activities
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
