DescriptionThe City of Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Maintenance Tech II to perform skilled and manual labor in the daily maintenance of city parks and amenities. The successful candidate will assist with park amenity maintenance and construction, playground safety inspections, and playground and open space maintenance and landscaping. Additional duties may be assigned such as special event setup/oversight, snow removal, and other emergency tasks. Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license required. May require night, weekend, and emergency weather-related work.   • Performs work in multiple skilled areas to support park amenity installation, maintenance, and repairs, including: masonry, carpentry, concrete, assembly, and equipment care
  • Properly service and maintain construction, maintenance, and landscaping equipment
  • Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment
  • May perform inspections of playground and associated equipment
  • Performs minor repairs of buildings, floors, doors and windows, locks, cabinets, and similar items
  • Performs general park grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, and fertilizing
  • Assists with the loading, unloading, and installation of materials such as soil, mulch, and gravel.
  • Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends
  • Follows established safety procedures
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESMay supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.Typical QualificationsCONDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) Certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain a Registered Technician (RT) spraying license within 12 months of hire.
QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • One to three years' of related experience and/or training in park or ground maintenance including carpentry, concrete, and masonry work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • Possession of a valid Registered Technician (RT) spraying license, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • Proficient with the use of power tools, hand tools, and maintenance equipment
Ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions.
