A parent educator works with families and their children from prenatal to kindergarten entry using skills in partnering, facilitating and reflecting with parents. Parent educators provide parent education and family support to enhance the quality of parenting, increase a parent’s understanding of child development and work with parents to help their child learn, grow and develop to meet their full potential.QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: • Certification and/or a four year degree in either Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, Vocational Home Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences or Child Development and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
or Two-year associate degree or two-year certificate program in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Nursing and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
or Sixty semester hours or more of credit from an academic degree granting institution which is contained within the United States Department of Education’s Directory of Post-Secondary Institutions and two years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE;
or Five years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Bi-lingual educator needed to work with our diverse communities.Experience:
  • Supervised ability in working with young children and their families is recommended. Other Requirements: • Be an organized, independent and self-motivated worker, with unquestionable integrity.
  • Be able to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths. • Be competent with computer skills including; email, word processing and the ability to use the PAT record keeping system.
  • Personal, licensed and insured reliable transportation is necessary to provide home visits throughout the school district.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties/responsibilities may be assigned.
  • Complies with policies, procedures and guidelines as set by McDonald County Schools, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and Parents As Teachers National Center (PATNC).
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Provides personal visits to families on caseload using PAT Curriculum.
  • Provides developmental, health, vision and hearing screenings with all documentation completed.
  • Maintains accurate computer and paper documentation as required by MCS, DESE, and PATNC.
  • Completes required number of visits/screenings for families as determined by DESE and PATNC program guidelines.
  • Participates in all staff and district meetings.
  • Participate in monthly reflective supervision meetings and develop a Professional Growth Plan based upon core competency self-assessment.
  • Help plan and execute group connections as assigned. Notifies all assigned families of upcoming group connections.
  • Help develop and maintain resource network.
  • Collaborates with district, state and community programs in providing services as needed for children and families.
  • Cooperates, communicates and seeks assistance from other professional staff members.
  • Communicates regularly with parents by means of phone calls, texts and e-mail.
  • Promotes parent participation and involvement in educational activities provided for their children and actively recruits families to participate in PAT. • Other responsibilities as assigned by PAT Coordinator.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must receive a one-week training/certificate initial from the Parents as Teacher National Institute in St. Louis, MO. Every year after initial training, Parent Educator must annually complete required professional development hours in order to remain a certified Parents as Teachers parent educator.EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with MCS Board of Education’s Classified Employee Evaluation, Parents as Teachers National Center Parent Educator evaluation guidelines, and DESE guidelines.
