
PA/ARNP Hospitalist - Urology

- Exercises clinical competency and expertise in general urology with an emphasis on providing specialized care in the area of benign (non-cancerous) urologic conditions.
- Functions independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to evaluate, assess, diagnose, and treat urologic health conditions.
- Perform overall medical care and medical management exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided primarily in an inpatient setting under a collaborative practice agreement.
- Collect and synthesize information prior to rounding on the unit. Round with staff and/or residents. Discuss with the primary team and nursing staff and develop a plan. Place orders, consults, and other needs discussed on rounds.
- Participate in daily bed huddle.
- Assure effective communication/collaboration with all team members in the delivery of care. Communicate with staff and/or residents throughout the day as needed. Provide complete sign out to resident at the end of shift.
- Discharge patients in a timely manner; discharge summary, prescriptions, follow up appointments, coordinate with other services (VNA/PCP) as needed.
- Coordinate care as needed with multidisciplinary team(s) (Social Work, Registered Dietitian, Care Coordinator, and nursing staff). Communicate plan of care to patients and family.
- Evaluate and manage common issues (pain control, delirium, fever, abnormal vital signs, low urine output, nausea and vomiting).
- Performs medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribes, dispenses or delivers medication when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.
- Promotes health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
- Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the EMR and other records for compliance, billing and other regulatory standards.
- Participate and/or lead in quality, safety, and process improvement activities.
- Provides ongoing health education to patients and their families.
- Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff, medical and advanced practice provider students, residents and other health professional learners in area of clinical expertise.
- Serve in consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practices and patient outcomes.
- Ensure effective communication/collaboration with all team members in the delivery of care.
- Follow prescribed practices in communicating and elevating any quality and patient safety concerns. Coach and recognize team members whenever appropriate.
- Participate in the UIHC APP Council and professional activities in the department, hospital, community and professional organizations.
- Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
- Master’s degree required. Master’s degree in Nursing preferred. If Master’s is in a related field, Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required. Completion of an approved adult Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Program required.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
- Current board certification in specialty area and licensure as an ARNP in the State of Iowa.
- Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
- Licensed in the State of Iowa as a Physician Assistant.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills is required.
- Evidence of ability to function with a high degree of independence while actively collaborating with other health care team members.

- Previous patient care experience in urology.
- Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and medical management for patients in an inpatient and/or outpatient setting.
- Experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of UIHC policies and procedures.
