The Family Advocate serves as the bridge between families, community partners, and school teams. This role supports student success by strengthening school-home-community relationships, coordinating resources and programs, and leading engagement strategies aligned with Battle Creek Public Schools’ whole-child approach.Position Responsibilities:
  • Student and School Support -
  • Assist with basic needs services (clothing closet, hygiene items, food referrals).
  • Support school climate initiatives and student recognition events.
  • Help monitor student attendance and behavior (ABC) trends and support early outreach.
  • Work with school leadership, FACE Coordinator, and staff to align on goals and strategies.
  • Family Engagement -
  • Promote meaningful caregiver and community involvement in PFAC and school events.
  • Create welcoming opportunities for family feedback and participation.
  • Assist with home-school communication, interpretation needs, and outreach.
  • Facilitate monthly Power Family Action Committee (PFAC) meetings.
  • Track engagement efforts and submit monthly reports to the district FACE Coordinator.
  • Community Partnerships -
  • Collaborate with local organizations to bring services and support into the school.
  • Maintain a school-based resource list and connect families to appropriate services.
  • Coordinate volunteer-based programs (e.g., Reading Buddies, mentors, classroom helpers, etc.).
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of highly successful related experience
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge and experience with a wide range of community resources to meet student/family needs
  • High degree of organizational skills and the ability to work independently with limited supervision and a demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects and activities simultaneously
  • Above average interpersonal relationship skills with diverse stakeholders—staff, students, parents, community—and the ability to problem-solve, reassure and communicate in circumstances that may be pressured and demanding
  • Proven ability to meet the needs of an urban, multi-racial, and multiethnic school district
  • Understands and embraces all forms of diversity and inclusiveness in thought, word and exemplifies these values in actions
  • Exceptional communication skills—listening, speaking, writing, interpreting and transmitting complex instructions to others
  • Experience with personal computers and proficiency in using word processing, data management, internet, email and spreadsheets
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, integrity and knowledge of organizational policies and procedures
Salary: $20.00 per hourContract: 188 DaysSCHOOL SAFETY CLEARANCE: The successful candidate will be subject to a fingerprint and background check as a condition of employment.
