- Use computer aided design technology for simulation purposes. Master CAD software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, RISA 3D) for design and simulation. Familiarity with structural analysis tools.
- Prepare reports, designs and drawings.
- Make structural calculations about pressures, loads and stresses. It is expected for you to strengthen your ability to calculate pressures, loads, and stresses. Practice with real-world scenarios, especially for extreme conditions like Alaska’s climate (e.g., permafrost, seismic activity) while in this position.
- It is expected for you to deepen your understanding of construction materials suited for cold, remote environments (e.g., corrosion-resistant materials for coastal or industrial infrastructure and/or lightweight options for rural projects) while in this position.
- Since a Professional Engineer (PE) license is required and progress toward a Structural Engineer (SE) license is expected, prioritize SE exam preparation if not already in progress.
- Take online courses (e.g., Coursera, PMI, or LinkedIn Learning) in project management fundamentals, focusing on scheduling, budgeting, and contract administration.
- Manage small-scale projects.
- Consider the strength of construction materials and select appropriately.
- Provide technical advice on safe designs and construction.
- Assist in obtaining planning and/or building regulations approval.
- Analyze configurations of the basic components of a structure.
- Inspect buildings, bridges, retailing walls, and other infrastructure to evaluate existing conditions and foundations, often in remote locations.
- Monitor and inspect work undertaken by contractors to ensure structural soundness.
- Hone communication skills to effectively liaise with architects, contractors, and other engineers. Practice translating technical concepts into clear, concise terms for non-engineers.
- Build experience working in cross-functional roles and teams.
- Assist in administering contracts and managing projects.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- PE required, working towards SE
- Minimum three (3) years of work experience as a Structural Engineer.
- Experience in project management is preferred.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials and legal regulations.
- Sound understanding of physics and mathematics.
- Ability to liaise with professionals from other disciplines.
- Three-dimensional conceptual skills.
- Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail with superb organizational skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines on multiple projects at the same time.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willing to travel to remote locations averaging once every three months. Typical trips are 2-4 days but may be up to 2 weeks under special requirements.
- Travel to mine sites or federal facilities is expected and may happen with short notice. Must be able to pass random drug testing while visiting sites.
- Excellent communication and IT skills.
- A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.
