The Med/Surg Clinical Nurse Lead Registered Nurse (CNL) is a leadership role designed to influence, support, and empower the inpatient bedside staff to provide exceptional care in an environment where our patients, community, and employees thrive. The Clinical Nurse Lead brings operational structure, strong clinical skills, education/empowerment facilitation, and effective leadership during the inpatient nursing shift. The CNL is skilled at managing shift operations, providing direct care, attending to critical situations, and assessing, training, and facilitating the nursing staff to function safely, independently, and cohesively as a team. The CNL oversees adherence to requirements and excellent clinical practice during the designated shifts. The CNL participates in the inpatient unit council and is actively engaged in clinical process improvement. The CNL collaborates with the Unit Director and inpatient clinical team to create and uphold a culture of Safety, Empathy, Respect, Vision, Integrity, Community, and Excellence.What you’ll do day-to-day:
  • Skillfully manage daily assignments, code response roles, patient flow, and handoffs.
  • Facilitate MD huddles, staff breaks, shift huddles, and end-of-shift debriefs for effective team collaboration.
  • Ensure timely reporting and serve as the unit point of contact for the nursing supervisor and visitors.
  • Manage a small patient assignment and provide advanced clinical care, including assessments, medication administration, and emergency response.
  • Perform and train others on required documentation and IV placement; assist with invasive procedures and bubble studies.
  • Lead and facilitate responses to sepsis, stroke, rapid response, cardiac arrest, and other medical emergencies, ensuring adherence to protocols and timely care.
  • Facilitate real-time learning, provide precepting, and support the orientation of new staff.
  • Collaborate with the unit director on staff assessments
  • Model and empower nursing independence through effective communication, clinical decision-making, and team collaboration.
  • Communicate education needs and participate in unit education initiatives.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (Bachelor’s preferred).
  • Current Vermont or Compact multi-state RN license
  • BLS and ACLS are required
  • Preceptor Course (within 6 months).
  • Meditech Proficiency
