Position Summary:As a full-time faculty member, this position delivers an exceptional student experience through teaching, scholarship, and service in support of the overall academic quality of departmental programs. As a champion of student success, this faculty member innovates and collaborates within the University to deliver outstanding course content and academic programs to the diverse student population at National University. The nursing professor contributes to the curriculum design and the operation of the department of nursing.Essential Functions:Teaching
  • Provide exceptional student experience, from initial contact to degree completion and engagement for nursing students.
  • Preparation of curricula and development and implementation of courses, student advising and feedback.
Submit a class outline and booklist by specified dates and adhering to the syllabi. * Comply with published grading criteria, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Assign quality coursework and examinations in alignment with course outline in a timely manner.
  • Maintain office hours online or onsite to champion student success.
  • Respond to student contact within 24 hours.
  • Provide on-going content preparation and development of delivery modalities for adult learners.
  • Recommend suitable instructional material, textbooks, and library acquisitions.
  • Maintain innovative curriculum that reflects current subject matter, technological literacy, and current methodology in field.
  • Teach courses as assigned by Director of Nursing (Chair) per policy.
  • Support flexible and convenient courses and programs for lifelong learners.
Expected instruction utilizing teaching through engagement incorporates specific performance guidelines which include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide consistent, timely, quality, substantive, constructive feedback to students.
  • Reflect a content focus.
  • Focus on helping the student improve knowledge and skill development.
  • Provide assessment of student work.
  • Encourage student engagement with peers, the instructor, and the learning resources.
  • Be multimodal.
  • Course shell preparation in advance (welcome letters, videos, announcements, AI, adding supplemental content, communicate days and times of live session meetings, etc.).
  • Adhere to university policies and procedures.
  • Return student work in a timely manner. Remember that in most courses, students are submitting work frequently, and a prompt reply to student questions helps students stay current in their course work.
  • Faculty is expected to respond to messages from students within 24 hours.
  • Interact with students consistently (discussion boards, live online sessions, email, and texts)
  • Complete applicable assignment and learning outcome rubrics.
  • Appropriate documentation of student issues and intervention (preserve emails threads, notes in feedback, complete forms when required).
  • Timely notify students of any changes in course schedules, additional materials, or live class sessions dates and times.
  • Communicate with students using University-designated systems and through university-assigned email accounts.
  • Re-engage a student who is not actively participating in the course.
Scholarship
  • National University recognizes the importance of faculty research and scholarship in maintaining currency in the discipline.
  • The department faculty will develop the research and scholarship criteria in consultation with their Department Chair / Associate Dean.
  • Faculty will describe their plans for research and scholarly activities in their FAP and report progress in their Annual Review (AR).
Service
  • Provide service primarily to the nursing department with some service at college, University, or system level. Examples of service include but are not limited to:
  • Pursue and accomplish activities in service to NUS, NU, college, region, Dept or program.
  • Participation in recruitment, selection and mentoring of faculty.
  • Program service such as staffing classes, participating in meetings, writing reports, etc.
  • Development in professional growth programs for faculty.
  • Organization of seminars, panels, or colloquia.
  • Participation in shared governance in University, Colleges, departments, academic programs.
  • Professional activities in local, national, or global community, outside of the University.
  • Embrace differences in race, gender, age, ability, and geography into our academic fabric and appreciate those differences as drivers of change.
  • Participate in commencement exercises and other important University events.
  • Provide Faculty Annual Plan (FAP) annually to the Chair.
  • Participate in faculty governance and perform administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Complete all trainings as assigned (faculty development, required compliance trainings, etc.)
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements:Education & Experience:
  • Terminal degree (DNP, Ph.D., EdD) in primary discipline taught or in a discipline that is recognized within the field as related required.
  • Nursing license and certifications to teach BSN didactic and clinical courses in California are required.
  • Eligible for CABRN approval in M/S, G, C, O, &/or PMH; or CH, Pharmacology, or Leadership clinical experience required.
  • Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by (required):
  • One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; or
  • One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency; and
  • Completion of at least one (1) year's experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service preferred.
  • Experience in teaching in a Competency Based Curriculum strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards preferred.
