- Provide real-time ASL interpretation between spoken English and sign language during in-person and virtual meetings, presentations, and events.
- Accurately convey the content, tone, and intent of the speaker’s message to deaf or hearing-impaired participants.
- Understand the subject matter of discussions or presentations to ensure precise and contextually appropriate interpretation.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality in all interpreting assignments.
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, agendas, or technical terms in advance.
- Facilitate effective communication between individuals who are deaf or hearing-impaired and hearing participants, ensuring equitable access to information.
- Adjust interpreting methods and language level to match the communication preferences and comprehension level of the individual(s) served.
- Comply with Section 504, ADA, and other applicable accessibility standards and policies.
- Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in ASL, Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or related field.
- Minimum three (3) years of professional sign language interpreting experience in varied environments.
- Demonstrated fluency in ASL and strong understanding of English grammar, syntax, and idiomatic expressions.
- Ability to interpret in settings involving specialized subject matter, including technical, medical, or government topics.
- Knowledge of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse audiences.
- RID certification (NIC, CI/CT, or equivalent).
- Experience providing interpretation in Federal government or healthcare settings.
- Proficiency in using video remote interpreting (VRI) platforms and related technology.
