TITLE: Greenhouse Student Volunteer CoordinatorDEPARTMENT: SustainDUFLSA STATUS: HourlyOPEN TO: Undergraduate StudentsDATE AVAILABLE: Fall 2025Position DescriptionThe Greenhouse Student Coordinator will help support the university-wide sustainability committee towards its Laudato Si' strategic planning efforts by enhancing campus-wide engagement with the DU greenhouse. The sustainability student coordinator internship is a year-long appointment under Career Programs and the Office of the President. The overall purpose of the greenhouse student coordinator is to:
Partner with student organizations and faculty to sponsor two-co-curricular programming opportunities for our campus community;
Learning Objectives
Develop leadership skills in organizing, orienting, and supervising volunteers;
Demonstrate proficiency in maintaining and troubleshooting greenhouse hydroponic systems, including monitoring nutrient solutions, pH levels, and environmental controls;
Form research question, then collect, document, and interpret greenhouse operational data--present findings at the Spring 2026 EXPO;
Strengthen teamwork and communication skills by working closely with faculty, staff, and peers to integrate greenhouse activities into curricular and co-curricular programs.
Responsibilities
Orient and supervise weekly greenhouse volunteering sessions;
Organize and maintain greenhouse DUImpact page;
Maintain greenhouse hydroponic systems;
Work with Greenhouse Coordination Team (faculty and staff) to support curricular and co-curricular activities in the greenhouse;
Research hydroponics or related sustainability best practices to design a relevant on-campus research project; gather, document and report findings that the Spring 2026 EXPO.
Design and promote at least two (one per term) sustainability initiatives that center the greenhouse to students, staff, and the community through social media, newsletters, and events;
Assist SustainDU members, and other interested parties in the organization and coordination of sustainability-themed events and outreach programs;
Contribute to developing, reviewing, and updating internal sustainability policies and procedures under the guidance of Prof. Wilson and create a sustainability event guide to share throughout campus;
Skills/Abilities
STEM major with Junior or senior standing for the 2024/2025 academic year;
Have an interest in sustainability and civic learning;
Have experience with/interest in plant science, horticulture, food systems, or similar;
Creative, flexible, and also be able to work independently and as a team;
Ability to work indoors and outdoors, lift 20/30 pounds regularly
Attention to detail
Hours/Pay/Credits: 5-10 Hours Per Week; $15/hour; 2 credits via Career Practicum (CP355)
