We can’t wait to grow alongside you.Job OverviewTufts Medical Center is seeking a Professional Development Director (PDD) who is passionate about delivering world class, evidence-based clinical education for the Inpatient Adult Behavioral Health unit. Our behavioral health employees work together as a dynamic, multi-disciplinary treatment team who are focused on providing quality, patient-centered care! The ideal PDD candidate should be a transformational leader who is authentic, inspirational and thrives in a diverse setting. The PDD role is a highly visible position who serves as an expert clinical resource for nurses and other health care staff. The PDD will collaborate with team members to build a culture that emphasizes flexibility, creativity, humor, and compassionate care. The PDD will promote nursing education for new hires and student nurses. The PDD will coordinate nursing orientation, develop nursing competencies, and support new and existing clinical services through education and process improvement strategies. The PDD will work with Psychiatry’s senior leadership to shape the development of evidence-based and cutting-edge treatment modalities. The PDD will provide a wide array of consultation services, education, resource development, and leadership in the areas of workplace safety, behavioral restraints, and best practices in the field of behavioral health care.
  • The Professional Development Director, utilizing innovative and flexible solutions, evidence-based practice, and practice-based evidence, is responsible for establishing an environment that facilitates professional growth, role competence and proficiency in their specialty. The director is accountable for the achievement of professional and clinical outcomes for all assigned staff and or patient populations.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Director, the Professional Development Director is responsible for the interview and selection of unit staff (professional and technical). For the first 6 months to one year, based upon advancement with competencies, all staff newly hired will have a direct reporting relationship with the Professional Development Director. This will facilitate continuous performance feedback for the new hires during the initial orientation phase and pivotal first year of practice; ensuring successful professional enculturation and specialty nursing advancement and performance.
  • The Clinical Nursing Director, the Professional Development Director, and the Nurse Executive team, collaborate closely as the nursing leadership team serving as the accountable role for staff competence and outcomes that provide excellence in patient safety and quality, create a culture of safety, and lead the development of nursing practice.
  • The overall outcome of professional development is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that translate into practice and contribute to the safety of patients/families and provision of quality care. In addition to acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitude, specialty excellence includes the evaluation and measurement of current clinical knowledge, proficiency of technical skills, application of critical thinking and performance by each member of the nursing team. The Professional Development Director leads the development of these measures and methods and evaluation of staff performance and practice outcomes.
Education, Experience, Licenses, etc.:
  • The successful Professional Development Director will have the skills, knowledge and vision for nursing practice customarily acquired through advanced nursing education through pursuit of master's degree.
  • Two to three years of experience in healthcare, as appropriate to specialty or designated patient population, required.
  • Leadership capabilities and skills essential.
  • Adult learner knowledge and expertise.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
  • Massachusetts Registered Nurse License required.
  • Master’s degree is required.
  • BLS Required, Instructor Certification preferred.
  • ACLS and/or PALS, NRP required.
  • Specialty certifications highly preferred.
