
Private Swim Instructor - Downtown YMCA

- Teaching swimming techniques, swimming strokes, and water safety rules to students with varying swimming abilities
- Instructs private swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs
- Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports)
- Challenge more experienced swimmers to enhance their swimming abilities
- Assessing the progress of students and adjusting teaching programs accordingly
- Monitoring students to prevent accidents and injuries
- Implementing ground rules for each swim session
- Planning swimming lessons that take into account students’ abilities and progressive development
- Identifying incorrect swimming techniques and correcting students accordingly
- Ensuring that the swimming pool and locker rooms are kept clean and tidy
- Helps to create new curriculum to serve the needs of program participants
- Adheres to YMCA program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practices
- Attends staff meetings and training
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies
- Provides participants and parents with on-going feedback regarding student’s progress
- Set up, take down, and organize class equipment. Report damage equipment to the supervisor
- Secure qualified substitute when necessary
- Act as a responder in case of injury, accident or illness in the pool area. Provide back-up coverage to lifeguards as needed (ex. crowd control)
- Adhere to Association aquatic uniform policy
- Minimum age of 17
- 1 year teaching swim lessons preferred or equivalent aquatics experience
- Swim Instructor Certification - YMCA Swim Instructor Certification preferred
- Must be able to demonstrate Swim Instructor skills to YMCA standards
- Detail orientated, self-motivated and able to work independently
- High level of understanding of YMCA Swim Lessons Curriculum and ability to utilize in a variety of settings.
- Ability to adapt lessons to the needs of the participant and create an engaging curriculum for class period.
- Proven ability to recognize students who may need assistance
- Knowledge of general water safety and ability to to recognize and remedy hazardous and dangerous situations
- Verified ability to swim and tread water within Y-USA training guidelines
- Knowledge of swimming and ability to teach at all age groups and various levels
- Able to communicate with all ages and levels of students, parents and caregivers, and other Y staff and volunteers
- Ability to provide individualized instruction and knowledge to program participants
- High level of organizational skills in order to communicate and schedule appointments effectively
- Punctual and professional to work with program participants
- Willingness to provide a flexible schedule to accommodate for program needs
- Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification
