Drive starting car in a consistent and safe manner for each live harness race at Dover Downs
Wash starting car as necessary
Fuel starting car as necessary
Store starting car in proper place at conclusion of each racing day
Take direction from Starter when appropriate
Use extreme care and horsemanship to provide safety to all horses racing at Dover Downs
Work in high-traffic area with respect to horses and horsemen
Provides exceptional customer service
Works safely, following all established safety rules and regulations
Communicates effectively with co-workers, supervisors and guests
Follows all relevant policies and procedures
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Must possess high school diploma or GED or equivalent work experience
Current Delaware driver’s license required
Licensed by the Delaware Harness Racing Commission (DHRC)
Prior experience operating a starting car for harness racing in a racing environment or three years experience as a groom and/or trainer of standard bred race horses.
Ability to maintain a straight and consistent course with the starting car while the gate is extended
Ability to drive ahead of the horses with the starting car gate extended for a prolonged period of time should an emergency arise
Ability to step up into a vehicle
Must possess good communication skills and assist horsemen regarding shoe repair issues
Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled
Must be able to work weekends, holidays and nights as needed
Must be able to successfully pass a background check
Must present an overall professional appearance and report to work in appropriate attire
Must be able to speak, read and write English
