DescriptionThe City of Roanoke is seeking a Parks and Recreation Program Supervisor for Events to assist in planning, coordinating, developing, promoting, and supervising a wide range of special events and programs that serve City residents, schools, community organizations, churches, recreation centers, and other partner agencies. This includes signature events such as Freedom Fest, Kids to Parks Day, and the GO Outside Festival.A major component of this role is overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Mill Mountain Discovery Center and managing special event rentals in Mill Mountain Park. The supervisor will ensure smooth facility operations, exceptional visitor experiences, and effective coordination of private and public events in the park.Additional responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating with department staff to develop, deliver, and evaluate programs, events, and services.
  • Working with the Events Coordinator to solicit donations, sponsorships, and other resource development opportunities to support events and initiatives.
  • Serving as a liaison to community partners and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and enhance programming. Will work closely with the Mill Mountain Zoo and serve as the Mill Mountain Park Supervisor for the Mill Mountain Advisory Board.
  • Discovery Center supervision, including: staff scheduling, coordinating facility rentals and maintenance, program and exhibit development, visitor experience, inventory, purchasing, and facility reporting.
  • Oversee and facilitate requests for weddings/special events through playroanoke.com
  • Serve on the GO Outside Festival planning committee

This is a non-exempt position.Typical Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in recreation, leisure services, natural resources or a related field.
  • One to two years of related experience and/or training in recreation and leisure services, programming, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
