The America 250 Digital Communications Specialist will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications with support from the Director of Heritage Outreach. This position will work to support Washington's 250 initiative by assisting in all aspects of digital communications. This position will also work with the 250 Coordinator and the Heritage Outreach team to design engagement opportunities and identify target audiences. This work supports the overall mission of WSHS which is to explore how history connects us all while addressing three key strategic goals: center inclusion in all that we do, build and maintain authentic relationships with communities across Washington, and stimulate critical discourse and new scholarship about Washington State history and the field of history overall.A little about us:
The Washington State Semiquincentennial (250) Committee was established by the Washington State Legislature in 2022 to coordinate and provide guidance for Washington's official observance of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, as marked by the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Legislature appointed the Washington State Historical Society (WSHS) at stewards of the 250 Committee and the commemoration more broadly, and those efforts are being managed by the WSHS's Heritage Outreach Department.DutiesSome of what you'll be doing includes:
- Coordinate digital communications for Washington's statewide 250th Commemoration
- Develop effective communications strategies using accessible and engaging language to reach a wide and diverse audience and bring general awareness to and interest in the 250th in Washington
- Create, schedule, and disseminate social media content across multiple platforms
- Coordinate with the Heritage Outreach Department to create tools and assets to help the public engage in WSHS's signature 250 programs through their own programming and social media
- Support the development of content for the WSHS's 250-specific website
- Manage public submissions to the website for various engagement portals such as the statewide calendar of events and a map-based story submission program
- Review and analyze website traffic and social media data to inform ongoing digital communications strategy
- Curate examples of external partner or public communications and/or social media posts related to the 250th to share on Washington's 250 channels and to use as documentation in the after-action report
Any combination of related education and demonstrated experience totaling a minimum of four (4) years such as:
- a bachelor's degree
- an associate's degree and two (2) years' experience
- a high school diploma (or equivalent) and four (4) years' experience
- Demonstrated related experience should include digital communications work such as social media management on multiple platforms, website management, various content management systems, and graphic design (especially related to content creation and branding)
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills tailored to digital formats and experience tailoring messages to varying audiences
- Working understanding of website and social media analytics tools
- Experience producing digital content, including photography, and video.
- Ability to work independently, handle multiple projects, prioritize work appropriately to meet deadlines, and produce quality results on schedule with attention to detail
- Strong familiarity with Adobe Create Suite (especially InDesign and Photoshop) and Canva
- Strong experience with Wordpress, HTML/CSS, and website content management
- Experience producing digital content, including photography, and video.x a historical society, museum, and/or cultural organization
