Description and FunctionsOpen Until FilledGENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Wyoming Department of Corrections State Penitentiary, located in Rawlins, WY, is seeking a Correctional Major. This position provides supervision to all subordinate POST-Certified staff and ensures that duties are carried out in compliance with policy and procedure. This position is responsible for implementing and supervising all security functions in and throughout the Wyoming State Penitentiary buildings and surrounding area. Monitors all security processes and techniques; evaluates security efficiency; coordinates security training; corrects and improves security procedures; monitors inmate activities that represent threats to the security of the institution.Human Resource Contact: or 307-777-6404ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
  • Acts as the Chief of Security for all security operations of a large prison.
  • Conducts performance appraisals on Captains.
  • Serves as a Duty Officer for on-call incidents after hours.
  • Responsible for internal security and emergency preparedness audit coordination.
  • Ensures all security post orders are reviewed, updated, and submitted for approval yearly.
  • Serves as the Department Head - Part of the Executive team for the facility.
  • Responsible for ensuring all security equipment is in stock and workable.
  • Responsible for the budget of the area, such as equipment, training, and overtime for the security operation.
  • Responsible for ensuring the security schedule is posted in advance and that training, vacations, and other leaves are coordinated for appropriate shift coverage.
  • Supervises the transportation department at WSP.
  • Reviews all staff reports and forwards corrective action recommendations to the Deputy Warden or Warden.
  • Assigns staff for policy writing and reviews for standards adherence.
  • Responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace, including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.
QualificationsKNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of State Personnel Rules and requirements for the supervision, discipline, and counseling for all security staff.Strong supervisory, interpersonal, and communication skills.Knowledge of human behavior and crisis behaviorKnowledge of the criminal justice system, correctional procedures for prisons, and department policies.Skill in oral and written communication, organization, time management, and decision making.Ability to interact with a variety of inmates; ability to investigate inmate and employee issues; ability to problem solveMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)Experience:2-4 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional CaptainCertificates, Licenses, Registrations: Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.OREducation & Experience Substitution:5-7 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional CaptainCertificates, Licenses, Registrations: Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.Necessary Special RequirementsPHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, drug screen, and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work extended shifts, holidays, and weekends.
