The Iñupiaq way of life is woven into our curriculum, programs, activities, and daily interactions within Ilisagvik College and our community partners.SUMMARY OF POSITION:The Instructor/Assistant Professor of Iñupiaq Studies is responsible for teaching within the Iñupiaq Studies program (which includes certificates and an associate degree) and collaborating with the Iñupiaq Studies Program Chair to advise and support Iñupiaq Studies’ students, develop curriculum, and grow the program.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and teaches discipline-related courses with focus on Iñupiaq language (including grammar), history, and Alaska Native Tribal governance.
  • Prepares and maintains updated instructional materials, syllabi, course curriculum, and College catalog copy.
  • With the Iñupiaq Studies Program Chair, completes annual program assessment and data collection, necessary to remain compliant with accreditation standards
  • Evaluates student performance and submits appropriate grades and reports, as required.
  • Maintains active communication with program advisory committee, external partners (as needed), and students.
  • Recruits and supports adjunct faculty as needed.
  • Maintains office hours, as required.
  • Serves as academic advisor to Iñupiaq Studies Program students.
  • Participates in professional development, as appropriate.
  • Completes reports and presentations, and attends meetings and special events, as required.
  • Actively participates in College and community service including serving on internal committees, local community and task forces, and other College activities.

  • Complies with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated experience with distance delivery.
  • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated management ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
  • Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College.
  • Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community.
  • Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Required]:
  • [Instructor level] Associate’s degree or equivalent experience/knowledge* in Iñupiaq Studies, Alaska Native Studies, Rural Development, Tribal Governance, or related discipline.
  • [Assistant Professor level] Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience/knowledge* in Iñupiaq Studies, Alaska Native Studies, Rural Development, Tribal Governance.
  • A minimum of two [2] years’ teaching experience in the appropriate field.
  • A recognized expert in Iñupiaq language, history, and/or Alaska Native Tribal governance.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Preferred]:
  • [Assistant Professor level] Master’s degree or equivalent experience/knowledge* in Iñupiaq Studies, Alaska Native Studies, Rural Development, Tribal Governance.
  • Valid driver’s license.
