- Define and execute the long-term strategy for mainframe engineering aligned with enterprise technology goals and regulatory requirements.
- Lead initiatives to modernize legacy systems, including mainframe-to-cloud migration, hybrid integration, and adoption of DevOps and CI/CD practices.
- Be responsible for the performance, availability, and security of mainframe environments, ensuring compliance with SLAs and regulatory standards.
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of engineers, architects, and operations professionals across global locations.
- Partner with business units, cybersecurity, risk, and compliance teams to ensure mainframe systems support evolving business needs.
- Champion the adoption of automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and emerging technologies to improve efficiency and reduce technical debt.
- Establish and maintain robust risk management frameworks for mainframe operations, ensuring alignment with enterprise risk policies and regulatory expectations.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to implement and supervise controls for data protection, access management, and threat detection across mainframe environments.
- Lead incident response and root cause analysis for mainframe-related outages ensuring timely resolution and communication with collaborators.
- Design and maintain resilient architectures and recovery strategies including regular testing and documentation.
- Lead risk exposure from vendors and service providers supporting mainframe infrastructure, including contract compliance, SLAs, and risk assessments.
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership and risk committees on mainframe-related risks, mitigation strategies, and compliance status.
- Champions a risk management culture through implementation and demonstration of processes and procedures which identify and mitigate risk.
- 15+ years of experience in IT, with at least 8 years in mainframe engineering leadership roles.
- Proven track record of leading large-scale infrastructure programs with multimillion-dollar budgets.
- Experience managing global teams across multiple time zones and cultures.
- Ability to influence C-level partners and translate technical strategy into business value.
- Demonstrated success in change management, organizational transformation, and talent development.
- Mastery of mainframe technologies including z/OS, COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS, DB2, RACF, and MQ.
- Demonstrable experience in mainframe modernization, including integration with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), re platforming, refactoring, and API enablement.
- Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and hybrid integration models.
- Strong understanding of enterprise security, encryption standards, and compliance frameworks.
- Knowledge of automation tools and scripting languages.
- Strong vendor management skills, including contract negotiation and performance oversight.
- Ability to assess risk, ensure business continuity, and align technology with enterprise risk management strategies.
- Experience in cost optimization, capacity planning, and ROI analysis for infrastructure investments.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Executive education or MBA is a plus.
- Prior experience in Financial Services is preferred.
