- Must be mentally alert and physically capable of performing all duties required of a CPO, Head Lifeguard, Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor. May act as a First Responder for emergencies in any part of the building. Completes Incident Reports as necessary.
- Always exhibit a professional attitude, which includes wearing proper staff attire, supporting and enforcing pool rules, YMCA policies and decisions and answer member questions about YMCA programs and services.
- Must be able to communicate clearly with members and staff using Listen First skills.
- Work with Aquatics Program Director to hire, train, develop, and supervise all Aquatics staff (Lifeguards / Head Lifeguards / Swim Instructors).
- Assist in planning, implementation, and supervising Aquatics programming.
- Responsible for providing department oversight and leadership in the absence of the Aquatics Program Director.
- Ensure that all safety requirements are maintained in the pools, on the decks, and surrounding areas. Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all State, local and YMCA health and safety regulations, and maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and all aquatic facility/pool maintenance. Notify the Aquatics Program Director of any needs.
- Ensure all Lifeguards are always Rescue Ready. Complete Quick Checks oversight for each pool and shift. Responsible for conducting and recording routine live drills and In-Service Training.
- Create Lifeguard Schedules and assist with Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor coverage to ensure program delivery and maximum usage of all pools. 25% of full time hours per week will consist of Lifeguarding or swim instruction.
- Responsible for stocking and inventory of all first aid supplies and kits, as well as checking daily & weekly logs for AED/Oxygen supplies & testing.
- Foster an environment that is positive, motivating, and engaging to all members and staff.
- Provide breaks for Lifeguards, assist in rotations and guard and/or teach swim instruction as needed.
- Provides leadership and modeling of all enhanced cleaning of areas and equipment, assisting and supporting the efforts of the YMCA of the Jersey Shore when it comes to health and wellness for the facility and other locations where the YMCA of the Jersey Shore conducts business. Employees may be asked to assist in other areas of the facility when needed.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Keeping areas safe. Reports damaged equipment to Aquatics Program Director.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Ensure proper coverage of Lifeguard, Head Lifeguard and Swim Instructor shifts.
- Conducts Aquatics orientations with all new employees and supervises their acclimation to policies and procedures.
- Assists the Aquatics Program Director with evaluating staff performance and providing frequent feedback to staff.
- Work with Aquatics Program Director in planning staff meetings and In-Service Training.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- At least 3 years of Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor experience.
- Leadership experience in the areas of staff supervision and development, program planning and initiative, and pool deck & pump room operations.
- Certifications:
- Current American Red Cross [ARC] Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Administering Emergency Oxygen or equivalent
- ARC Water Safety Instructor [WSI] or equivalent; YMCA Swim Lesson V.6 Instructor within 90 days of employment
- Pool & Hot Tub Alliance [PHTA] Certified Pool Operator [CPO] or equivalent within 90 days of employment
- ARC Lifeguard Management & YMCA Lifeguard Supervisor v1.0 within 90 days of employment
- Ability to assist with the daily supervision of a diverse Aquatics staff of Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards and Swim Instructors. Some prior supervision of staff preferred.
- Demonstrate sound decision-making abilities and possess mature judgement.
- Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to respond calmly and quickly to safety and emergency situations.
- Must demonstrate qualities of a leader and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
