Job DescriptionThe City of Avondale is accepting applications for the position of Municipal Security Officer. This is a FLSA non-exempt, full-time position with benefits.We will accept the first 150 applications or applications up to the closing date, whichever comes first.
Provides security for the City Hall complex and other City facilities, enforces rules and regulations, answers questions, provides information to the general public, and provides customer service as required.Essential Functions
  • Patrols the City Hall complex, which includes City Hall, Library, City Court, and Police building, both on foot and in a patrol vehicle.
  • Monitors video surveillance of all City complexes.
  • Monitors assigned locations and promptly reports emergencies or suspicious activities to the Police Department.
  • Drives, stands, and walks to City buildings, parking areas, and grounds in designated areas to observe unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism.
  • Provides customer service assistance, such as directing citizens to other City facilities. Evaluates and resolves customer service-related complaints.
  • Communicates via portable radio to maintain contact with Police Department resources.
  • Identifies and reports safety hazards, security concerns, and other deficiencies related to City buildings.
  • Receives and investigates security-related complaints.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs security for City Council meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • Knowledge of industrial security policy and procedures and electronic security alarms and systems.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the same or similar position, such as security officer, police officer, or detention officer.
  • Skilled in using portable radios for clear communication and in responding effectively to emergency situations.
  • Valid Arizona Operator's Driver's License or the ability to obtain license by time of hire.
  • Must obtain DPS Terminal Operator Certificate (TOC) within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must obtain Court Security Officer Certification through the Arizona Court Security Guard Academy within one (1) year of hire date.
  • Must be able to pass a certified Defensive Tactics Training Course.
  • Required to wear a ballistic vest and utility belt as part of standard safety equipment.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, and psychological examination.
Supplemental InformationThis position requires participation in a rotational schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.Ability to read, understand, interpret, explain, and strictly apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies, and regulations.Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.Work requires the ability to prepare and write clear and concise records, reports, correspondence, and other written materials as required.Implement emergency procedures when appropriate or as directed. Serve independently with little or no supervision. Skill in neutralizing and de-escalating threats and in exercising sound judgment within general policy guidelines.Within this job, the employee normally performs the duty assignment within broad parameters defined by general organizational requirements and accepted practices.Provide information to customers and the general public. Forward employee and citizen complaints regarding security services to local supervisory personnel for investigation and resolution.Ability to handle interactions with hostile or irate individuals, identify unsafe or hazardous conditions and behaviors, and maintain a professional working relationship with City employees and visitorsMay be required to serve as lead officer at a post, serve independently with little or no direct supervision, and be qualified to carry and use chemical agents, restraints, batons, and other non-lethal defensive weapons.Employee must maintain regular attendance.
