Job Description:Summary:Functions
as a member of the Surgical Team to provide a safe and therapeutic environment
for the Surgical patient and to assist the surgeon. Provides care for patients
of all ages, including infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric.Responsibilities:mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Functions in the surgical scrub role:10.0pt">10.0pt">- Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in instrumentation and
materials, such as sutures.10.0pt">10.0pt">- Demonstrates proper preparation and passing of needles, sutures,
surgical drains, medications and hemostatic agents.10.0pt">10.0pt">- Assists the surgeon as necessary, anticipating needs.10.0pt">10.0pt">- Demonstrates knowledge of surgical field set-up, including knowledge
of instruments and equipment.mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Assists with the optimum utilization of resources,
including OR time by:10.0pt">10.0pt">- Using physician preference cards10.0pt">10.0pt">- Anticipating needs of the team10.0pt">10.0pt">- Using the proper resource person10.0pt">10.0pt">- Selecting equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner10.0pt">10.0pt">- Uses supplies in a cost-effective manner10.0pt">10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Demonstrates knowledge of AORN standards of asepsis,
including but not limited to:10.0pt">10.0pt">- Surgical scrubbing, donning of gowns and gloves10.0pt">10.0pt">- Creating and maintaining surgical field(s).10.0pt">10.0pt">- Attentiveness to contamination possibilities, responding appropriately
when it occurs10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Demonstrates knowledge of Retained Surgical
Items/Surgical Counts protocol.10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Demonstrates competency in preparing and utilizing
equipment including, but not limited to:10.0pt">10.0pt">- OR tables10.0pt">10.0pt">- Harmonic scalpel10.0pt">10.0pt">- Lasers10.0pt">10.0pt">- Suction devices10.0pt">10.0pt">- Hydrothermablation machines10.0pt">10.0pt">- Tourniquets10.0pt">10.0pt">- Generators10.0pt">10.0pt">- All powered instruments10.0pt">10.0pt">- Drills10.0pt">10.0pt">- Saws10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Maintains a safe environment for patients,
physicians, and other surgical services staff.10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Assists in safely moving patients to and from the
operating table.10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Demonstrates knowledge of the proper procedure for
the breakdown of the sterile field and preparation of instruments for
decontamination and return to Central Supply and Processing.mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Maintains a positive, professional relationship with
peers, patients, patient families/care-givers and other colleagues.10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Maintains current BLS certification.mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Participates in lifelong learning through continuing
education.10.0pt">mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Participates in community activities.Other information:BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • Completion of at least one of the following options is required:
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program, or
  • Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program, or
  • Current certification as a CST, or
  • Current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered), or
  • 3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist
  • Successful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program
  • Current BLS Certification is required upon hire
