(the "Foundation") is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity which funds gifts and grants to serve community needs, primarily through our Thrift Sale which offers donated goods for resale. The Thrift Sale mission is to generate and effectively manage our resources to provide for the needs of people, primarily children and families in Washtenaw County, and in doing so promote diversity, collaboration, and financial and environmental stewardship in harmony with the mission of the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor. The Sale is open to the public Fridays and Saturdays; but staff and volunteers work Monday through Thursday to prepare items for sale. In 2023 the Foundation distributed more than $1,000,000 to individuals and nonprofit organizations throughout Washtenaw County. In addition, the Foundation provided approximately $150,000 in the direct gift of goods to more than 500 families. The work is fast-paced and rewarding, combining the efforts of paid staff, Kiwanis members, and many dedicated volunteers.About the PositionThe Maintenance Technician supports the Facilities Manager and Facilities Coordinator in ensuring that the Kiwanis Center and grounds remain safe, functional, and well-maintained. This role involves assisting with repairs, general upkeep, and event setup, while interacting with staff, volunteers, and tenants in a courteous and professional manner.Primary Responsibilities
Assist the Facilities Team in routine maintenance, repairs, and improvements of building spaces, utilities, equipment, vehicles, and grounds
Perform routine janitorial and housekeeping tasks
Assist with maintaining facility security systems
Support movement of materials within the Kiwanis Center as needed
Assist with setup and breakdown of spaces and materials for events
Support opening and closing procedures for building operations
Tend to maintenance needs of building tenants
Provide coverage during operating hours if other staff are unavailable
Relate to volunteers, staff, and community members in a friendly, professional manner
Perform other tasks as assigned by the Facilities Manager
Position Qualifications
Basic understanding of utility systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC)
Basic knowledge of commercial/residential construction applications and materials (interior and exterior wall systems, flooring, windows, doors, locks, ceilings, fixtures, landscaping, etc.)
Skilled in safe use of hand and power tools
Ability to read and follow design plans and diagrams
Ability to lift 50+ pounds safely
Ability to work on ladders and scaffolding
Ability to perform sustained physical tasks, standing or moving for long periods
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, with attention to safety
Ability to coordinate tasks independently and follow through to completion
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
Good verbal, written, and internet communication skills
Attention to detail and quality workmanship
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to consider multiple perspectives
Organized and attentive to detail
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with conflict resolution techniques
Experience working in a nonprofit environment
Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects at once
Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentMust be able to bend, stretch, reach and lift up to 50 pounds regularly, and safely work on ladders or scaffolding. Requires standing or moving on foot for most of the work period. Typical workdays can have 5-10,000 steps depending on the project. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
