- Demonstrates ability as evidenced by the following responsibilities:
- Preoperative:
- Ensure anesthesia carts are supplied and machines are in each room prior to the beginning of the surgery schedule and between procedures. Checks and replaces anesthesia gas tanks as needed
- Retrieves special anesthesia supplies that are anticipated and/or requested by the person administering the anesthetic before and during surgery
- Ensures monitoring equipment and supplies are ready
- Ensures the anesthesia machine is ready for use including troubleshooting and correcting problems
- May perform daily anesthesia equipment inspections including but not limited to suction, electrical plugs, gas connections, oxygen, and nitrous oxide cylinders
- May assist in positioning patients for procedures
- Intraoperative:
- Assist Anesthesia during intubating and extubating procedures as directed
- Restock all used supplies as needed during a surgery
- Dispose of contaminated materials and disinfect equipment in accordance with general operating room policy and procedure concerning biohazardous waste
- Postoperative:
- Clean anesthesia equipment in the Operating Room and outside locations following each procedure
- Clean, maintain, and package used anesthesia materials and equipment
- Completes tasks as requested by anesthesiologists/CRNAs/charge RN/other team members as appropriate to facilitate the preparation and conduct of anesthesia.
- Additional duties:
- Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology and infection control practices
- Troubleshoot broken equipment and fix as directed by clinical engineering
- Manufacturer’s instructions for use are followed on all instrumentation, equipment, and supplies
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge relating to anesthesia procedures to effectively anticipate the needs of the Anesthesiologist/CRNA
- Follows department policies and procedures
- Quality Improvement Activities
- Ensures quality patient care by utilizing ongoing quality improvement, safety, and infection control evaluation methods as demonstrated by:
- Performs quality control and troubleshooting on assigned anesthesia equipment
- Maintains equipment in good working order
- Checks for sterility, date of expiration and holes/tears in packaging of supplies
- Checks and labels fluids/medications accurately, discards outdated/unlabeled fluids and medications
- Customer Service
- Maintains active professional relationships with doctors and staff by assessing needs and levels of satisfaction. Demonstrates a positive, friendly, and courteous manner. Identifies, measures and documents, or reviews problems, inefficiencies or deficiencies as shown by:

- Functions as a preceptor for new employees. Fills out appropriate documentation and maintain communication regarding employee’s progress with the educator and coordinator
- Resource And Inventory Management
- Demonstrates ability as evidenced by:
- Ensures adequate inventory of all equipment and supplies related to anesthesia
- Maintains prudent par levels of all equipment and supplies
- Places orders to ensure adequate inventory and follows up with appropriate sources to ensure delivery
- Ensures that medications, drugs, and anesthetics are properly stored, refrigerated, and disposed of
- Supply inventory is maintained within approved budget
- Regulatory Compliance
- Complies with State, Federal, and local rules, regulations, accreditation rules, and assures staff compliance by:
- 100% of regulatory concerns or unusual occurrences are reported to Administration within 24 hours of discovery
- When patient injury/disaster occurs, Administration notified immediately
- Attends institutional and departmental health, safety, and infection control in-services by established
- Safety
- Identifies, corrects, or reports unsafe conditions immediately
- Knowledge of importance of safety issues about anesthesia gases
- Takes appropriate action in emergencies
- High School Graduate or GED from an accredited program
- Completion of an anesthesia technician training program approved by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT)
- Current ASATT certification
- Current AHA BLS certification
- 2+ years working as an anesthesia technician
