Job Description:SummaryThis position serves as a general supervisor of the laboratory, where services are provided for MyMichigan Health. Assists in the development and implementation of practices to meet operational and regulatory laws and standards Provides oversight of laboratory testing, quality control and in house specimen processing, which includes the preparation for shipment to reference laboratories. Supports and serves as liaison for Technologists, including recommendations on hiring, performance review, counseling and disciplinary actions of assigned staff. Monitors and assesses section performance to ensure established targets are achieved through process improvement initiatives. This position is responsible for being knowledgeable in all aspects of the Laboratory and is competent to perform the tasks required by members of the team. This person serves as a technical resource and facilitates the guidance, on-going education, coaching and training of all laboratory staff roles.
Responsibilities(20%)*Coaches, counsels, trains and develops assigned staff. Conducts team meetings, ensures effective utilization of laboratory computer system and ensures safe laboratory practices. Organizes and promotes daily huddles among assigned staff.(40%)*Communicates quality metrics and performance. Reviews cumulative quality control statistics and performance on proficiency surveys. Prepares for inspections and upholding regulatory requirements. Collaborates with laboratory managers and staff to develop or modify procedures. Evaluates processes to optimize workflow. Engages in problem solving and collaborates with laboratory team on improvement efforts. Bridges communication between the processing and testing areas.(20%)*Accountable for HR issues including coaching, counseling of employees, adherence to policies and procedures, education of staff on customer service skills to maintain consistency and high level of motivation. Completes JPR's on the team within areas of responsibility. Applies knowledge of schedules, time clock and pay management. Participates in applicant screening and new employee hiring. Supervise, coordinate and participate in work activities for entire department.(20%)*Responsible for communications in the lab by keeping staff informed of changes and ensuring all areas of responsibility are functioning with same guidelines and processes.OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists to establish policies and processes for the department and assures all policies, processes, procedures, and instructions are documented and communicated.

  • For High complexity tests, this position may serve as a General supervisor ( CLIA definition) and for moderately complexity testing may serve as a Technical Consultant (TC) defined in laboratory policy, to ensure: Remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory/ s established performance specifications; Patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system functions properly; Orientation is provided to all testing personnel; and annual personnel performance evaluations and documentation of testing personnel performance competency.
Certifications and LicensuresMEDTECHNO - Medical Technologist RequiredEquivalent Experience -
  • Must hold and maintain an active, national MT/MLS certification within 12 months of hire. It is preferred the first attempt occurs within 3 months of hire. Alternative national laboratory science certification may be accepted in place of ASCP certification for employees hired to MyMichigan prior to 1/1/2025 or hired to an acquired facility prior to integration date.
  • Non-certified employees must actively pursue an acceptable route to ASCP Certification and will be provided an appropriate amount of time to become certified. The amount of time offered is directed by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) route options and will vary by employee
Required EducationEducation - BACHELORS DEGREEComments - A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology or a bachelor’s degree in a science or health related field with national Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS) certification may also be considered. E
Other InformationEXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS:
  • Two (2) to four (4) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory or equivalent working experience within specific area of expertise required.
  • Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of basic marketing techniques and financial analysis.
  • Written and interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Must follow MyMichigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33%of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
