  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of daily work completion, directs resources and provides guidance to ensure work is completed accurately and timely. Acts as a resource for troubleshooting equipment pre and post procedures.
  • Acts as the primary resource for employees regarding the standards of high-level disinfection and endoscope reprocessing. This includes supporting training, developing and performing competencies, providing direction for daily operations, and giving input for annual performance reviews.
  • Supports completion of all safety and quality checks required in the high-level disinfection area, maintenance for the automatic endoscope reprocessors, and appropriate documentation for every flexible endoscope reprocessed.
  • Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection of new employees, staff development, providing performance feedback, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale.
  • Able to complete and train others in all steps of manual and automated flexible endoscope reprocessing per standards and guidelines established.
  • Ensures proper care and management of high cost endoscopes to include handling, repairs, loaners, and notifications of equipment shortages that could impact operations.
  • Uses creativity to ensure process, procedures, and policies meet the requirements of high-level disinfection and the organization.
  • Assists with GI and pulmonary procedures including esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy (FFS), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), bronchoscopies, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and endoscopic bronchial ultrasounds (EBUS).
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
  • GI Technical Specialist (GTS) advanced certification issued by SGNA by completing the SGNA Associates Program needs to be obtained within 6 months.
  • Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) certification issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc (CBSPD) needs to be obtained within 6 months, and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Education Required:
  • High School Graduate.
Experience Required:
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in Endoscope Reprocessing in procedural area and/or sterile processing department.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Must have thorough knowledge of high-level disinfection principles and requirements, inventory and asset management, and quality assurance activities.
  • Ability to work independently, with a high level of accountability and accuracy, in a fast-paced stressful environment.
  • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to support the coaching and development of the team members in the environment.
  • Knowledgeable about the impact of the role to the success of the operation and organization.
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent problem solving skills.
  • Must be competent in computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), manufacturer website and resources, locating SDS and policies related to role.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to:
  • Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist greater than 75% of the time during work shifts.
  • Lift up to 50lbs from floor to waist.
  • Lift up to 20lbs over the head.
  • Carry up to 40lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Push/pull with 20lbs of force.
  • Handle constant exposure to fumes from chemicals used during high-level disinfection process.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • Must wear lead aprons with the weight resting on shoulders.
  • Must have speech, hearing, & sight for communication during procedures in which incumbents are working side-by-side and must have touch and fine motor skill coordination.
  • Must be able to function in a very limited space as procedure rooms are small and work will be in close proximity to the other health care members and physician they are assisting.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluids; therefore, protective clothing including gloves, gown, and masks with eye shields, laser glasses, foot, and hair covers just be worn as necessary.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
