The University of Virginia’s College at Wise located in the beautiful mountains of southwestern Virginia is currently seeking applicants for an Assistant Athletic Trainer.Job SummaryAthletic Trainers serve as healthcare professionals within the UVA Wise Athletic Department. UVA Wise is a member of the South Atlantic Conference sponsoring 17 NCAA DII sports. Assistant Athletic Trainers are typically assigned oversight of primary sport program(s); however, they may serve in a supporting capacity for a secondary sports program. They are responsible for providing assistance to the Associate and Head Athletic Trainers in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses of UVA Wise student athletes. They may supervise student staff. They perform their work independently, under limited supervision.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide care for injuries incurred by all UVA Wise athletes. In conjunction with team physicians and the coaching staff, assess nature of athlete's illness or injury, treats and rehabilitates athletes to return them to full activity levels.
  • Conduct pre-season screening and conditioning to prevent injuries during competitions.
Administer first aid and emergency techniques such as applying tape, bandages, braces and padding to injuries. * Record and maintain detailed and appropriate medical records for treatment they or others administer.
  • Help establish and implement educational programs for staff and sports medicine students.
Interface with various internal and external personnel for referral purposes and information exchange. * Provide guidance to graduate students, undergraduate interns, and practicum students in the Sports Medicine unit.
  • Provide support in the administrative management of the Sports Medicine unit.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree
Licensure: Eligibility for State Licensure. An Athletic Trainer Certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) and CPR/AED certifications are required.Physical Demands:Work is performed in the process of providing medical assistance and services to student-athletes which may include physical therapy and rehabilitation. Work is performed in a Sports Medicine facility possibly with the use of compressed gasses, cleaning products, weight bearing and strengthening equipment and apparatus.Preferred QualificationEducation: Master’s degreeExperience: Experience as a professional athletic trainerKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesStrong interpersonal skills and teamwork aptitude. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Experience collaborating with coaches and serving student-athletes. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
