
Design Associate - Mechanical

- Application of Knowledge of Building Systems (Conceptual Design)
- Works with Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer to ensure understanding and compliance with owner’s building program requirements and facility or corporate standards related to mechanical and plumbing systems design
- Learns to confirm and review applicable codes and standards such as but not limited to the International Building Code Council (Mechanical, Plumbing, Gas, Fire), ASHRAE Standards (90.1, 62 and 15) and NFPA
- Given the scope of design services, the owner’s building program and facility standards, building code research and relevant industry standards, works with the Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer to establish and document the mechanical and plumbing systems basis of design and in doing so provide clarification, qualifications and design assumptions regarding relevant design issues
- Assist Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer and works with building/facility owner to ensure that the appropriate cost-effective systems/products are utilized in their facility
- Assist Project or Senior Mechanical Engineer and works with building owner and construction management team to validate construction cost and provide value engineering options as may be necessary
- Knows when to obtain support from the Lead Mechanical Engineer or Senior Mechanical Engineer for assistance to determine engineering and design building requirements
- Design
- Knows BIM and AutoCAD design software, and incorporate designs into project documents/models
- Proficiency in how to establish the building envelop thermal insulation values for the purpose of energy code compliance and cooling/heating load calculations and runs energy compliance software
- Learning how to run cooling/heating load calculations
- Learning how to select and schedule mechanical equipment
- Learning how to design, layout and sizing:
- air distribution systems and related equipment
- chilled and condenser water systems and related equipment
- steam and associated condensate systems and related equipment
- Working towards proficiency in the development of control drawings, schematic diagrams, points list and sequence of operation
- Proficient in the creation of a complete and accurate set of constructions documents including cover sheet, floor plans, details and sections, equipment schedules and control drawing drawings
- Accredited engineering degree
- 3 to 5 years experience
- Passed the EIT/FE exam, preferred
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be able to excel in a fast-paced environment
- Preparing to become a licensed PE
